Why does it get dark early now,other than the clocks going back..thats all i can think of and my daughter says there is another reason..

Are you smarter than a 10 year old? I think iirc the days are shorter in winter because we are further away from the sun, as you know it takes a year for our planet to revolve around the sun, in summer its nice n hot and you have the long days and short nights but in winter its vice versa plus its fucking freezing

its all to do with the earth's tilt on its axis.
its the same reason we have seasons.

So the Earth was on the Piss all this year cos i didnt see a summer

 

judging by the amount of homework my 5yr old and 7yr old bring home apparently not..... theyre expected to do homework 7 days a week

and there was me thinking school was for learning

 

it was drinking in wether spoons all year there popin up everywhere

 

The actually really worrying thing is i was round a friends house and his lil girl had her maths text book open on fractions and equations, she is 8 i think...

I looked at them and actually panicked, i seriously feel sad i could not do them.

 

Its because of the earth's angle to the ecliptic plane (i think its about 23 degrees or thereabouts).

The earth is in a circular orbit and its not that the earth is further away in winter (or it would be winter all over the planet!). Its because the northern hemisphere is tilted away and the southern towards the sun and vice versa in our summer.

At the moment the sun is low in the sky as we are tilted away so the sunlight is hitting the surface at a much more shallow angle that if the sun were say directly overhead.
