Default urgent please help (christmas will be ruined) *updated*

hi, im buying a car for my girlfriend for crimbo but the person im buying it off never sent off the stuff so the car isnt actually in her name its in the previous owners name. how do i get it into my girlfriends name?

thanks.

******update below*******

right, i bought the car now and have a receipt.

also when i got the car the person i got it off gave me a V5C regerstration certificate.

as they never used the car they never filled this V5C out so if i fill it out now in my girlfriends name and send it off etc will it now be her car legally?

Were you given the green slip? I think its the V5C?

If so, go get a form from the post office and apply for a new logbook for the car.... with a bit of luck the DVLA won't charge you the Ł20 that it is to obtain a new log book if you have the green slip.

Technically this shouldn't happen because as the buyer of a car you don't do this, it's the Seller's reponsibility to send that off.

However my next door neighbour just bought a car from a car dealer.... they got given the whole of the log book..... dodgy traders....

Just fill it in and send it off yourself. If you dont have the V5 you need a V52c i think it is from the post office and include a cheque for Ł25.

As above, just apply for a new log-book. The log-book is just the registered keeper, the actual owner is/can be different. Did you get a receipt?

Either way, a new log book will sort it. They tell you that it will takes weeks, but sometimes the new log-book is through in a week.

How can you say that? it might be a "first" car? 106's are good anyway especially for girlies

The green slip (V5C) is the part of the logbook that a new owner should be handed when they purchase a vehicle. The logbook itself (V5) is the bit with all the vehicle info on it that the seller of a vehicle should fill in (with the new owner's details) and post off.

Not 100% sure, but don't think you need to send off the V5C - you need a form from The Post Office. If you do a covering letter with it and photocopy the V5C stating that the seller hasn't posted off the logbook and you are awaiting it, they will probably waiver the fee for obtaining a new log book.

Don't send off the V5C on its own.

ok thanks, i was never given a V5 as the owner never had anything but the V5C.

so what do i do with this V5C as its not been filled in in any way, just says what car it is and the prev owner details, rest is blank.

Fill your details in (or your girlfriends in whatever case) and the date you bought the vehicle.

Does your girlfriend need to be given the logbook for Xmas? If not, I would just apply via the form from DVLA for a new log book and state that either the previous owner lost the V5 or you have not received it. Then again, if you bought the car today, I wouldn't be putting down anywhere that you bought it weeks ago, cos if it aint taxed or has any outstanding motoring offences pending on it, you may end up with them!

If that's the one that enables you to apply for a lost/misplaced V5 then yes. Think you will need to fill out the VIN no. etc on the form, but other than that its a straightforward thing to do.

That's okay, I am certainly no guru on buying/selling cars, but the amount that have been bought/sold/swapped and px'd over the past couple of years whilst the new laws have been in has made me somewhat knowledgeable.

did you hpi it?
that's a first
then you should have asked why the log book hadn't changed names
if you've bought it and got a recipt etc then you need to making sure that the recipt has both the date you collected the car AND the time you did the exchange of money/car
