Very true. Why people do this is beyond me.

Even worse than 'offers' is the 'PM me for details and price' ads.

I think it would be a BAD idea to make GD gold member posting only. Thats one of the reasons why the sites so popular in my opinion, because anyone can join in and add info and opinions.

Maybe a 5 posts a day limit in GD for non paid up members or something would be a good compromise between allowing an element of interaction from "freebie" users and not hammering the bandwidth pointlessly that is paid for by the contributors?

Anything else?
What do you lot currently think of the trade names situation? (Gotta keep simon happy... )

And signatures?
Stu,

I am happy ... Resigned to my fate on here as most of it I guess is of my own making.

Actually I agree about the current standing rules of traders names.
My gripe was the inconsistency of those rules applied to others which
seem to have been sorted now (and have been for a long while).

Obvously I would love my original name back, at least every would know
who I was, if you beleive ALL the rumours about me, it would show
that I am not running away from my past like some have implied.

I still think traders should not be moderators as I have seen and been
on the end of a moderator abusing his powers for his personal and
business gains.

Otherwise, I like your list.

Many thanks

Many changes to the structure have allready been put into place as the new sticky explains, and a controvercial sticky placed in the Muppet room.

i also think that only paying members can post in gd is a bad idea as i for one would never have paid to post in there when i first joined, say you didnt like it here cos if your an illigal imigrant or not realy clued up & ask a silly question etc you get slagged to death for 3 pages & dont come back

how about 3 months after you join you join then you have to pay to post??

i also reckon that to make this a better place for every body (as it has been going a bit down hill in the last year) that the start of any arguments then the people should be warned then deleted if they persist, i know they do any way but it should be dealt with faster to stop the people on jumpin on the bandwagon??

For what its worth, I don't agree with the change to the Muppet room. They're just going to post pointless shit elsewhere!

I think the changes are a great idea, but forcing it to be Goldmembers posting only in rooms including general discussion is probably a step too far whilst there are still errors.

I appreciate that this problem is being addressed, but I didn't renew my gold membership because of the errors last time, and I certainly wont do until then.

I post a lot less on here anyway these days, but still like to have access. Making the muppet room gold members only is a stroke of genius though! It's like an internet form of ethnic cleansing!

heres some suggestions (some are against the grain sorry )

Amalgamate the technical model forums into a single forum

ditch Gold Members - or make it an anonymous contributions scenario - i.e. no different rights to different members

Give paying advertisers their own forum which they can mod themselves

remove mod status from any commericial interest user (making PF mods completely impartial)

Migrate BB to vBulletin

GD for gold members only?! What a fucking joke!
I used to be a gold member so don't get me wrong, I would pay if I actually got something from it.
I think anotherfordforum.com might start getting more popular.

Couldn't agree more.
GD is already 'if your not in the circle, we dont take any notice' etc, taking the muppet room away is going to mean a hell of a lot more shit in GD, going to piss people off, and also the numbers are going to decrease.

Talking about people using the site that dont contribute, Rob was a gold member for over 2 years, therefore he contributed, look where he is, banned for life because he signed up with more than one username , and you wonder why we didnt renew?

I think it would mate. If its less specific like you say, then new posts would end up about half a dozen pages down in a few minutes.

I can see the reasons for changing the muppet room as regards speed and bandwidth etc, but i think it they should really be contained in one area to keep them away from the 'normal' folk.

Youll then have to ask yourself, what actually is a muppet post, as im sure theyll post in GD now anyway, so this will make it such a pain in the arse for mods, as every other post will have to be deleted im sure.

fuck off the non-user access....it's blatant to see that so much site traffic is lost through google searching and non-registered users browsing the forum.

Why not make it members only....they dont have to be gold members or anything but it'd save all of the bots and non-registered people from eating up the bandwidth.

It just seems daft to me that you havent made it regsitered users only to save on bandwith....Especially when you like to shave a few kb off of the bandwidth bill by removing signatures all the time.

Heres an example....

I mean thats like 1/4 of the site use free to un-registered users...its a no brainer....make the forum registered users only.

Also getting rid of the search function to free up bandwidth whilst leaving the site open to guest user abuse seems a bit fucked up & backward tbh....
I pay my 20 quid purely because I have things to sell on here and make it back that way....other than that its a slow, poorly run, over moderated site. The only thing going for it is the knowledge base and information contained here...Other than that its screwed up!

the muppets are revolting

thing is, it's a bitter pill to swallow as on one side you've got the people who won't goldmember themselves because of the critical error problem and on the other hand you are forcing the muppeteers to goldmember themselves to keep on going
this looks like spiting your nose type actions as you are going to get less membership contributing

weather this is worth less members is for the future to decide, but pf has become a victim of it's own sucess

size of sig is proportional to its disk size is it not? So removing bigger ones and putting smaller ones back means your reducing bandwidth and shaving a few kb

But tbh.....the fact you accept the rest of what I put and tried to justify your sig policy over discussing the other issues I highlighted makes my point.

But Sigs are not stored on PF so don't contribute to bandwidth consumption

RE BANDWIDTH.....

It would help bandwith too if all the java script comments and HTML
comments in the code thats loaded on each page invisibly were removed.

An example off one tiny part of this page ... (comments highlighted)...

May be only about 10% but thats alot of data if you look at the whole site !!

what about a way of rating members, for example items for sale, they could get a positive or negative rating on the way the items are deliverd, the conditon of the item, etc. i've seen this kind of thing on other forums, it can give you an idea of who to trust

I have brought up the subject of webcrawlers a few times before, about how they can slow a site down as they are constantly searching, also the Google Ad-Sense advets are renowned for slowing sites down too.

This morning 08:14am...... In total there are 290 users online :: 135 Registered, 18 Hidden and 137 Guests most of the guests will be webcrawlers.

They are not as easy to deal with as you seem to think Lynne. For now, all we can do against them is make all the forums members only, which they are.

Sorry Stu... but I don't have a clue whether they are easy or hard to deal with TBH, I was only mentioning them in the first place because of a discussion I read on another forum about what can cause slow performances.
