With a 400D you can take good pics to.
You can take good pictures with any dSLR that's a year old or two. Don't be fooled by the megapixel race, 6MP will print A4, even A3 fine in all honesty, and, unless you're really into photography, you are unlikely to print that much, so, is anything more than what your PC/TV can display really worth it ?
But in a few months the newer 450D will come out. Maybe thats something for you?
Each new camera brings some new features, more recently it was more megapixels (dubious benefit), the latest crop offers LiveView (personally, I don't see how that could be of any use with a dSLR except in very very rare circumstances).
Slightly faster autofocus maybe (and I mean slightly), better (if you can really see it) image quality may also reasons for buying a newer camera.
The only real benefit to newer cameras I can see, is less noise at higher ISOs, that's about the only reason I would upgrade mine, or, and the upgrade would have to be to a full (24x36) format dSLR, rather than current APS-x format.
To be brutally honest, get a cheaper body, and spend the extra money on the lens, rather than the other way round.
The lens, you will keep for years (some of mine I've had for 20 years), the body, well, you'll discard that in a few years for sure
Learn how to take good pictures first, the kit will not make you a good photographer, and, unless you're sticking to auto mode, have a very critical eye for image quality in the purest sense, you will not really notice the difference between old-ish and brand new.
How expensive is your printer, is it calibrated, is your monitor calibrated, what paper do you print on, is that suitable for your printer/inks, etc.... unless you have a positive answer to all these questions, what I said above about image quality stands even more.
Only caveat, some manufacturers (Nikon / canon irrc) seem to insist on making new cameras that are not compatible with older lenses, and that could be a problem with the above strategy
Not mean to be a rant

With canon you can use older lenses. But not ALL lenses. I am using a few to.ok i have a 300D but i know for a fact that a 400D can use them to.
And for the rest. i couldnt agree more. You can buy a 2000euro cam but if you can't take pictures or you don't know how then just don't.

Being good at photography has nothing to do with what camera you use.
You should outgrow your gear rather than try and grow into your gear
Megapixels don't matter a toss until you start getting huge prints made, unless you're getting pixelated results you don't need more MP.
I use a D2x and a D80, one is 12.4MP and the other 10MP, you'd be hard pushed to notice a difference between the results when using the same setting and lens even though one costs more than 4 times the ŁŁ's as the other!
The advantages are mostly in build quality, ergonomics and specialist features.

I'm mostly talking about the 30d & 40d
Went out to the shops in the mall. Had a quick play with the XTI and the 30d. I love the way the 30d feels. While the XTI is a great cam it just doesn't feel right? I think it's between the 30D and The 40D now.
I know with technology creeping up so quickly whatever you buy now months down the road a new improved version will be out. I just want to get something now that will be with me for a while.
As for the printing stuff. It's true about the megapixels.. unless I'm going to be printing poster sizes it wouldn't matter much. I do have access to our company's reprographics deptartment if I ever need it. The have all their monitors calibrated (I'm sure). Thanks for your views though.
