Anyone had a Mk2 Golf Gti 8v or 16v
Trawling the net trying to find one to strip out & use as a track toy as they seem quite cheap & more available than a 205 Gti. The 16v seems more expensive is their much difference in performance between 8v & 16v, so is it worth paying a few hundred quid more for a 16valve ?

I had a K jet 8v a few years ago and loved it to drive was on jamex springs and shocks, K&N filter, Scorpion ss system and VR6 front brakes
I got it from a breakers yard for Ł400 as a non runner and got Ł750 for it a year later
I fancy a 16v for every day/trackday use after xmas
Check out Octobers PPC magazine as its got a mk2 tuning guide too

Ive had 2 8v MK2 s
Really good fun , but can be a bit heavy , ive never driven a 16v one but ive always heard good things , just look at how many germans use them at the ring
the 205s seem to have a bit of a premium on them at the moment , people seem to buy shitters rip the interior out and call them track prepped and stuff Ł500 on the price
Hey kev is Golfnutz still over northwich way ?

I bought a 16v Mk2 a few weeks ago.... might have a go with it on track then swap it or punt it. Always liked 'em but really don't need a 4th car right now
So the verdict is they're pretty decent on track?
Still to refit the kit, give it a good tidy and T&T it......

Its purely for a track car only, been there and done the 3dr Cossie track car thing & it got a bit expensive as i don't have the money or time to do more than 4 or 5 trackdays a year & it just sat about & was too much money sitting in the garage. I've got one of the newer 2003 onwards V70R volvo's which is the wife's car,got rid of the 3dr & bought a 1998 S plate estoril M3 Evo coupe which sits in the garage but if we want to use it instead of the Volvo sometimes its useable unlike the 3dr was,she wouldn't drive the 3dr ! So now looking for a 16v but they seem to be a bit more than 8v, their is a D plate one on ebay not far from me with a few hrs to go at Ł700 at the moment. Problem with the 205's is they are more expensive & i don't think the running gear/engine will be as strong as a Golf, plus i want car that owes me no more than Ł1500 when fully completed stripped out with seat, R888 rubber,G60 brakes, not sure on suspension but nothing fancy, i only live a few miles from Lyddon race circuit & 30 mins from Brands also so just something for a bit of fun which doesn't matter if it gets a few dings ! What do you think i should be paying for a 16v with a good engine/box but scruffy body ?

I had an 8v and I absolutely loved it. The 16v is a nicer drive but you need to rev it harder to get it to go fast. Its power is further up the rev range.
Any chance to post a pic of what was possibly my favourite owned car of all time
Cheers

I had a 16v, the heater matrix popped after id had it for about an hour. Was proper giving it some abuse and then steam started coming into the car and the floor was soaking lol. Apparantly a common fault and it should have been racalled and had newer type of matrx fitted, which it hadnt been.
I ended up just putting a bit of pipe in to take the heat marix out of circualtion to get me by.
Was quite surprised how quick it was. Handled well aswell even though it was quite boaty.
Had it about a 2 weeks in total before it was in an accident.

Bit of an old thread that i started 5 yrs ago !
Well i ended up buying a Mk2 Golf gti 16v back in August 2009 for Ł348 from e bay, drove it back home 140 mile journey and it dumped all of its coolant when i got home. It was a bit neglected but the body and engine were sound.
Fitted these parts over the last 3 yrs:
Fitted 6 point cage, koni coilovers, bucket seat,harness,Mk3 hubs and 280mm brakes with yellow stuff pads, bigger master cylinder, bought 8 G60 corrado alloys, 4 have R888's and other 4 have road tyres,Mk3 21.5mm front antiroll bar, poly bushed everything including rear beam, welded seams on lower wishbones, stripped interior, momo steering wheel, mocal oil cooler, baffled sump and diesel windage tray, 4 branch manifold, vibratechnics engine mounts, magnex exhaust.
Headgasket started leaking in July 2011 at Lydden trackday, blew a hose as was pressureizing, bodged it up to get it home and the car stood for 11 months except taking it for an MOT in May2012.
I had bought myself a abf 2.0 bottom end the year before and sourced a KR ported head along the way, anyway built the engine up myself on a stand, incl lightened flywheel and modded exh cam in place of inlet cam.
Did a couple of sessions at Lydden a few ago with the new engine and it feels a lot better with the modded 2.0 16v lump. Its going on the rollers this Friday to mod the warm up regulator to get better fueling at top end as its still running the standard old Kjet setup.
Anyone thinking of getting a Mk2 Golf for trackdays do it, must be one of the cheapest cars to mod and good fun to !

16v, big bumper, 3 door, oak bay green, bbs wheels... the one to have. Sold it after a year as it really didnt live up to it if I am honest. I had a standard RS Turbo before this and it was hands and feet over a better car

I am talking about track cars though (on a budget), no way could i drive a noisey old Golf for a road car ! I have an E39 M5 as a second car and that feels old compared with the wifes V70 R design.

I will be honest, I thought the engine was lacking in grunt, didnt really get any better if you reved it hard etc... one thing I will say about it, she had powersteering, abs etc and drove like a modern car. But it never really lit my fire. It was the Mrs car as she had them years ago. I wanted to put a S3 lump in her, make it 4x4 or RWD and enjoy it that wayu but keeping the standard looks. Ours was on standard suspension and was very rolly polley but I expect a good set of coilovers will solve that one

Enjoyed all my mk2's,2x 8v's and a 16v.
Gone now that they need a 2.0l 16v minimum conversion but they are a great car then, stood the test of time well.
As standard would make a good reliable daily but agree with booner999 that as standard their pretty disappointing, they werent all that back in the 80's,an Astra 16v could waste one all over the road but to give the vw some credit they will still be going pretty much ok after many hundreds of thousands of miles more than an rs turbo plus generally rust less.
A 20v conversion on one I think makes them an awesome machine, still a pretty looking car after all this time.
Loved my mk1 too and still have a cabby gti that will get an engine transplant as the body is all done and looking lovely .....

8v or 16v????"??
Hi
I have owned 3 8v previously and currently own a 16v.
The 8 valvers are fantastic cars but to be honest the 16v is so much more fun
My 16v has done 139k and still pulls like an absolute train, but you have to rev it a lot more than the 8v to get it really shifting
Off the mark there isn't much difference it is more towards the top end that the 16v comes into its own.

I prefer the 16v but the 8v is more revvy. Would like to own one with a VR as the 16v and the 8v are just slow now!

I had a 16v mk3 before(2.0 150bhp) and I wasn't impressed at all. At the time my mates 115bhp civic could keep up with it
I know we're talking about mk2's which are lighter though(I think), never owned one though, bit too old for a daily for me
