Default Audi A4- RWD?

As above... Just been looking on autotrader and noticed from the engine shot it looks like they are rwd. Always thought they were FWD

Is this correct?

Thanks

no, the a4 and passats and a6's are either FWD or Quattro, its just, as per the "old" audi way, the egine is well infront of the front axle line

The engine layout means bad handling, so much weight so far forward (engine is basiclly installed in the drivers side headlight) will lead to a tendancy to understeer.

Everything else about the A4 though (especially the early ones with the very sophisticated if a little troublesome front suspension layout) is pretty good and the net effect is that they handle pretty well despite the engine placement.

We had a p plate 1.8T quattro and it understeered badly at high speed. That bad I managed some off road and airborne one lunchtime I would rather forget

Yeah I guess if you swapped in something like an Mi16 engine and box that sits the weight back it would be pretty awesome.

Kinda defeats the purpose though ? MI16 (as an example) in a smaller lighter car would surely be better ?

a4's are heavy old buses.

I agree, just giving an example of an engine layout that would be better for handling.

Not suggesting anyone does the conversion, if you want something that handles just buy a scooby estate, lol

Can you get an evo estate? I think that would be a cool car.

Can you imagine an Audi enthusiast seeing a Mi16 engine in an A4

when clarkson did the feature on the new RS4 he said audi engines are so far forward its like driving with with a dead horse nailed to your bumper
