right here we go ,about 4 weeks ago did some work on a clients car for him, he came in and says he aint got all the money to pay at the time as he is a window cleaner and needs his car to earn the money to pay me
stupidly i let him take it and all has been well for 3 weeks giving me part payments untill now , he wont answer his phone , hes never in when we can get him on the phone he promises to come and pay then dosnt show,
question is, im a registered locksmith and can easily pick his car lock, can i immobalise his car legally to prevent him using it till hes payed, my invoices all state parts are ours untill payed for.
really pissed off now as he owes me 400 quid

If he owes you money you can create what is known in law as a 'lien' which is a charge over an asset. There are stipulations and it's notr as eaqsy as it sounds but you can do it. Problem is you gave the car back, sop taking it now may well be tantamount to stealing ? On that point, I'm not sure mate.
Can you not block his car in and refuse to move it until he pays up?
Hire a skip and drop it off directly behind if he's down a drive, or two: one each end if he's on the road. ..then add the price of them on his bill for taking the piss.

Richie - if it were me I'd immobilise the car, when he pays he can have the car mobile again. You haven't stolen the car, Old Bill will say it's a civil matter and won't be interested I'd suspect.

I had the same thing a few years ago
I got into his car ( without any damage ) poped the bonnet and took the plug leads and a few other parts of the car from his works car park so he couldnt get home
He had 3 mates who went to and from work with him
I waited until his finish time and sat and watched him wanging it over and pissed myself
As i sat with the plug leads hanging out my van window as i drove passed blowing my horn
My mobile phone rang about 2 seconds later with a very polite man asking me to please put the parts back on his car and him and his mates would club together and pay me there and then
I went back and collected my Ł80 and threw the plug leads on the floor and told him never to come near me again
childish i know ,,but very very satisfying

As stated CIVIL MATTER, unless you can show he had no "intention" of paying when he asked for the repairs, then this would be "obtaining goods or services by deceit", which is a criminal matter.
You are 100% legally within your rights to take the car so long as you cause no damage, I have done it many times,(repo work) police have been involved many times, but so long as you can SHOW a debt is owed by cars owner, you can keep it for 14 days subject to his paying upon which time if he has not you can sell the car to recover your debt, you have to give him a letter to this effect though just to cover yourself.
Most of the cars I repoed had no court order.
