On my mates P1.
He was holding it flat in 5th and hit the limiter.
He did see a flash of det on the power FC (seen many times before when running Ultimate)but managed to slow down as normal with no noises or any signs of failure.
Stopped for a chat and left the car running then drove off ten mins later to hear a noise like he had ran a big end.
But upon stripping the engine we found all the bores looked like this.

clear det but how are the bores scored? we found no metail particles in the oil??

hey are scored all the way round?
the scores ant deep but they are there, so its fucked.
I would have though it would have taken metal particles to score a bore?

i'd hazzard a guess at the oil film being burnt off due to det, scoring begins, probably started scoring on exhaust side (hotter side) but led to it being scored all round becuase of temps?, the knocking must be a bottom nend issue aswell, but then I aint no expert lol

Standard oil pump ?
My mates P1 failed and I know thats one thing he made sure was upgraded. Paul from Zen built him a replacement engine.
I'll link this to my mate as he does know his Subarus

It has steel crank and rods I believe, built for 400-450 iirc but he only runs around the 300 mark.
I'll see if I can get him to post on here or mail me some details.
He has had a lot of trouble free miles in it though already though

Hello there!
I am the said P1 owner. If your mate is on the net, point him at p1woc.co.uk.
The oil pump thing is a bit of a subaru myth, usually pumps either have loosened back plates or have become stuck due to bearing bits (engine has already failed, IMO).
No bits of shell in the oil? Could be in the filter, or the modine (water/oil cooler above the filter) or the bearing could be "squeezed" out the side of the conrod (shell bits can still stay intact). That does look like foreign material has scored the bores, but the most likely thing is a failed big end bearing.
Clonky noise on startup, hold it at 2500 & listen, rev to 4k & jab throttle for confirmation.
Big end bearing failure is extremely common on P1 standard engines @ around the 70k mark.
There are many contributing factors, rather than just one thing which is responsible, IMO.
"holding it flat in 5th & hit the limiter"
UK gearbox in that car is good for 175mph ish, so it was going some. The scoop on the bonnet is not particularly effective at speed, with air missing the intercooler, it will also quickly heat up & affect charge temps. This was a surefire tried & tested way to destroy the engine.
For a rebuild I would keep your heads, providing they are in good condition & go for this spec bottom end:
ACL Bearings
STI 9 Crank
Forged rods
Your choice of pistons (wiseco, etc)
Decent gaskets.
Zen did mine for me & it's done very very well indeed, got over 30k on it now.
I would approximate the cost of something like that at around £1500-£2000 for a built bottom end, plus removal & refitting & such. They are busy though, but worth going to, very thorough.

Cheers!

hey Ren...
I will let him see you post
He is P1 SUB on P1WOC
he has a front mount so no worries about the scoop.
Andy F reduced his rev limit from 8200 down to 7800 and thats what he hit in 5th well off the clock.
He has been looking into a few different option ranging from a new 2.5 short block from subaru thru to re boring the 2ltr and getting some forged low comp pistons.
Il let you know what route he goes
I will let him see you post
