Anyone who buys drives a 316 needs a good slapping (and a 318 as well)

Yes they may be slow, but as PT said, a 320's not going to be rapid either! Not everyone buys on outright performance, other things have to be taken into account which is why they build a whole range, is it not?

a guy at work here has one

same spec as the 320 (climate etc)

but returns well over 40mpg day-in day-out

and isnt as slow as you'd think

(just doesnt have that nice six cylinder noise of the 320)

It's the 4 cylinder thing. All BMW's should have six cyliners minimum. Let's see a 318 or an ST220.......HMMMMM let me think. When you take total cost (purchase and running costs). I think the ST220 would come out cheaper. People who have 316 and 318 BMW's are the sort of people who would buy a turd if it had a BMW badge on it and that is why they need a slap.

How can you compare a 318 to an ST220?

Thats all well and good for people like me and you mate who can probably afford to insure something bigger/quicker, but for the 19 year old in question, a 316/318 is all he can afford.

well if your gonna buy a beemer why not discount the entire range apart from the M models then as they are the only ones with decent performance

For the price of a 318 (brand new). Think how many better cars there are out there. I would rather have a mondeo with a decent size engine, with a LARGE spec than a basic BMW. This is my point. People who buy for the badge not the car.

they can be as well speced as the bigger bmw's its just the engine thats smaller.not everyone wants a big engined faster car ,some prefer an insurance friendly well built non rattly bmw.

i didnt think you got a 2 litre 24 valve? not on a h plate anyway. wouldnt that be the 12v m20 engine ? i think the 24 v was the 191bhp 2.5 engine that came out in about 1995 (m reg)?
i could be wrong though.
