Default bmw m3 compact

just wondered if anyone on here has any knowledge of these or has ever built one.wasn't sure how hard it would be to do and if it would be worth while or not?
remember seeing one on knockhill and seemed to go very well
just seen you can get m3 non evo engine and boxes fairly cheap and compacts are cheap as fook.
I'm guessing it would probably be better just to buy the m3 but thought it could make a good fun car

to me they just look the same just a little smaller.
and the fact you can get m3 running gear for about a grand and even less for the car thought could make a cheap fun track car.that hopefully wouldnt blow up lol.the one at knockhill was certainly quicker than a normal m3

What are you calling "running gear" ?

Cause to make it worthwhile I would want to be transplanting
engine (+loom etc)
box
suspension
brakes

well i was just thinking ive seen smashed m3's for roughly 1500 maybe were the car would still drive.maybe in a crab like fashion but was still running therefor i classed that as the running gear lol.ie diff, gearbox, engine etc.tbh the reason im asking on here was im not sure what would all be needed.wasnt sure if it would just be engine and box

Thing is, you can get a complete working M3 for 4K, so you need to make sure it comes in under that really to be worth doing IMHO

(says the bloke with a 1.6 shell with cossie gear that cost twice as much as buyign a cossie, so ignore me, lol)

supose.
so if i just got an engine and box and swapped it over would it run
if it would i think it could be done pretty cheap.but if you then needed to spend thousands getting things adapted etc it wouldnt be worth while obvously.
i only asked on here as someone may have done it before

For it to run you just need the engine and loom and ascociated wiring (including ignition barrel I expect for the immobiliser), but sod having over 300bhp on standard comact brakes etc as a track car.

but would you want to keep the standard m3 brakes if was used as a track car
ive not driven one on track but drove a 325i compact on road before and brakes were excellent.10 times better than my shonky sapph
its probably wouldnt be worth it unless got an m3 for much much cheapness.

You have to bear in mind that the compact shares the same chassis as the belated E30 - hence the E30 boys doing 5 stud conversions often use the compact back axle and front hubs etc etc

I've noticed a it seems a lot of circuits/driving schools seem to use the compacts with bigger engines fitted. Thought they may have a shorter wheelbase?

Is your Sapphire a 2wd? If a 325ti's brakes were ten times better ( at the same speeds ) your Sapphire brakes need overhauling - they're excellent brakes for a 200bhp car

Anyway have a look on www.compactm3cup.co.uk or www.328compact.co.uk

cheers mate for the links yeah they brakes maybe are ok for a 200bhp car but when folk up the power they should up the brakes first imo.they just didn't on mine lol its just had new disks and pads all round on mine and are in full working order.as i said i didn't use the bm really in anger just a few shots and felt alot more sharp and responsive than the sapph maybe from high speeds and prolonged use its maybe different?
and radders kent is near enough its fooking miles south from here still obvously a place with to much money

Std 325ti brakes might be fine for a couple of high speed stops for a 190bhp car but Sapphire 2wd brakes are a better system for that sort of power believe me.

It's probably that your system has aged over the yearsand needs refurbing.
When the Sapphires came out they were highly praised amongst their contemporaries for the brakes.

BMW have never quite mastered great brakes....look at the CSL

theres a blue compact that goes around in westlothian with an m3 evo engine fitted(321bhp). the guy owns a little bmw specialist garage between bathgate and dechmont. looks standard apart from the 4 tailpies poking out the back. i can look out his number if you want to talk to him.
he also has a ford flatbed truck with the e36 2.8 6 pot fitted.
