Default What is Retro?

What would say is Retro? I belong to a retro ford club and originally it was said anything that was no longer in production would be welcome and classed as retro. Agree? Disagree?

Everything pre-90s I'd say

Mk4 Escort killed off Sierra not long after, fuel injection and Cats as good as manditory, electrics everywhere as standard, inflatables stuffed inside steering wheels.... yep, deffo the end of an era!

Hmmm.... I wouldn't call a Focus RS a "retro" car, would you?

A different definition

"Retro cars are newly designed cars e.g. present Mustang that take many of their style cues from the original cars e.g. 1965-70 Ford Mustang, without using any of the original technologies."

Ford GT would be in here, along with the new Mini, Beetle, Crysler PT Cruiser etc. etc.

As for Fords, this has been debated soo many times and can mean many different things - to me it's probably pre 80's but to the younger folk it could be pre 90's

Actually a very good point.... Like the present Mustang or GT40 could be considered RETRO cos how it relates to the old version.... Tho the new Mini couldn't be considered Retro as it isn't very visually similar to the original...

IMO I call 80's style slightly boxy retro, although I wouldn't call late 80's Ford retro i.e. mk3 Granada or mk4 Escort, more a modern classic?!
70's classic/retro
earlier 60's, 50's 40's classic
and even older cars perhaps from the 30's vintage

its not all cut and dried

Very difficult to pigeon hole retro, to me it means something that is old fashioned yet cool, or a timeless style or fashion from an era.

I also think it depends on your age group, To me Mk2's are retro but Mk1's are Classic. A 3dr and Esc Cos could look retro to a teenager?

Anything designed pre 80s so all Capris, Mk 1 Sierra, Cortinas, Mk 2 Granadas, Fiesta Mk 1 etc. At a push Mk 3 Escort, but no Mk 4s!!
