Might be worth cleaning the air flow meter with some brake cleaner mate.
Also, disconnect the battery for half an hour to reset the ECU.
Take it there's no management light on the dash? If so - turn the key to first stage ignition (dash lights), then press the trip reset button in and hold it until the dials sweep - then start the engine and keep pressing the trip reset until it flashes DTC - if there are any DTCs - post them up and i'll tell you what they mean

If its any help, my missus has got a 2.0 ghia Mk1 Focus, she drives like miss daisy, and that only returns about 22mpg.
On a run you can get no more than 32mpg
I think basically they are just shit on fuel !

You don't need to disconnect the battery, there is a fuse labeled, "KAM", or keep alive memory, just pull this for a couple of minutes to reset ecu.
My dads 2.0ghia AUTOMATIC mondeo returns around 38/40, (was mine for two years so know).
When I had it and thrashed it I used to get about 25, but this is auto, so good I thought.

Funnily enough I've just worked my fuel consumption out today on my 1.8 Escort and it came back at 30mpg. That's mainly town driving with the odd spanking round the bypass.
I had to get a new lambda sensor a couple of months back after it went shit, you could smell it running really rich, and it's been good as gold ever since.
