Default Anyone recently managed to get out of doing Jury service?

... In England?

I've recieved a summons but really dont want to do it

Roughly 80% of my salary is commision based, if I do it for two weeks, the court system compensation comes nowhere near what I would recieve from work.....

surely I shouldnt be penalised financially for doing it?? Must be against EU human rights or something ROFL.....??

Go the first day, then declare you have a personal connection to the case
which you are allowed to keep private then you will be dismissed.
My brother did that

Really? Hmmmmmnnnn

I dunno if that will work AFAIK you are required for 2 weeks regardless of which case you are on???

Dont some people have to do 2 or 3 cases over two weeks??

I have been called up to go next month, There is no guarentee I will be selected as I am probably 1 of possibly 100, In the letter it says there may be more than 1 trial I am required for, and service does not generally go over 2 weeks, but then again you could have in effect wasted a day and not be required at all.
If you are self employed then I think you can attach a means form to prove loss of earnings, but dont fiddle it too much as come end of tax year you wanna show how little you earn

i had to write a letter stating that because there are so few of us at the company i work for, it would be unfair to put the work on to the other empolyees.

i got out of it.

unfair really that they just call you up and you have to do it

what happens if you are away on holiday from the time the letter was sent to the time the court session ends?therefore never being at home to receive the letter, hence not knowing about it?surely you have to reply to confirm that you have received the summons?

But the courts are paying circa Ł15k pa (pro rata) so that would mean MOST people would lose out financially, whilst I appreciate there may be a cut off, surely not everone would be allowed to get away with that?

If I had a "normal" paid job I wouldnt mind so much, but my basic salary will get me nowhere PLUS part of my salary is target related, I would also miss target by miles so will lose even more money...

Cant you show your previous wage slips to prove the amount your earn on a Average basis,

So unless they match that, plus the expenses, i dont see why you should loose out.

so they only pay a set wage? I thought they covered your average wage you would earn? How can they expect to pay someone on 40k the same as someone on 5k that only does a couples of hours per week for instance.

it does depend what you got arrested for, i rang up and they said unless its a serious offence or you done more than 5 years your not excused. I sent the form in and added what i got arrested for, got a letter back saying i was excused

ive done it twice now! you get the basic pay, then my work made up the rest,so i got exactly the same wages,no good if your self employed though you can claim extras for car parking and food everyday first time i nearly got away with it as i knew the defendant [gbh] so got off that one, then the next case the defendant didnt want me as a juror so i got asked to leave, lol, on the second time ,one of the jurors came back half pissed from the dinner time session and he got thrown off and bollocked on the first day,but it got him off doing it ,he was told not to come back you could always try that one damo
