Tyre question
What would happen if you had tyres rated for say 120mph but did 150+mph??? Would they melt? Fall apart? Pop? Or similar???
Bit of a silly question I know and I'm not about to go really fast either

why not try it n let us know
think they may not be up to the pressures put on them and just fall apart i would have thought
cant imagine they would do it on a one off but it would put a lot of strain on them n next its pop, bang, spin out, crash, died

If they were Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 to start with they will most likely go pop anyway at any speed!!

Mine were fine at 170mph.

Anyway, I've got Eagle F1's, why was this said?

i did wonder this about yours the other day actually mr c, was reading the right up in performance ford about tyres
what is yours rated at then?
I run 205/45 ZR16's.
I often wonder about people doing Top Speed runs on V-Rated tyres. I bet alot of people do, especially with these budget wheel/tyre builds around which have cheap tyres on them.

I only said that as I have bought in the past three new goodyear eagle f1 tyres aand two of the three within two years developed sidewall bulges, so had to be scrapped.
Goodyear were useless when I moaned and said I must of hit something(kerb) with them, unlikely as one had always been a spare and never fitted, I have had pm's from others who have suffered the same with these tyres.
It is a shame as I did rate these tyres very highly, not the best by any means but in my top five anyway.
I like the GOODYEAR SUPERCUP a lot better, but F*****G scary in the wet, maybe that's why they don't import them!!

they are all rated with a factor of safety in mind. You will see on the sidewall it will say maximum pressure 50psi for example, doesn't mean it will blow up at 51psi, I think tyre pressures have a factor of safety of 2, that means they are perfectly safe at 100 psi!
As for speed ratings, I dont know what the speed rating is, but a tyre rated to 150mph should be perfectly safe for 200mph+.
Dont quote me on that though

if i am right the speed rating is for a constant speed tested over a certain distance so a brief blat over the limit will be okay but kept over their limit for a time and they will deteriate quite badly quite quickly and will fall apart................i think this is right
