been offered 328i msport cab which has only 50,000 on the clock. i believe its still on its original engine which starts and runs fine although ive heard there were problems with the nikasil liners on this type of engine. what symptoms should i look out for?.

Has a slightly lumpy idle so if it had a problem how long could i expect it to last?

dont assume a slightly lumpy idle is nakasil issues, you could allways insist of a engine check before purchase, you can also call bmw uk with the reg number and they will tell you if engines been done, most of the nikasil blocks are fine now it was all due to the high sulpur in fuels a fair few years back, if woried get it comp checked and leak tested etc, prob cost ya £60 so nothin really

They smoked & were very hard to start sometimes when you take the oil cap off they started due to flooding very easy! i work for a BMW dealership & if you pm me the last 7 digits of the chassis no should start 2 letters n 5 numbers i will be able to tell you if it ever got the prob sorted under warranty alot of them did..

If its an E46 it will have a M52TU - they don't have bore wear issues.

an E36 might have a m52 and they do.
