Default rebuilds- how much? wet cr test on pg2

whats the average price for a tuner to do a rebuild on a 4wd cossie

not looking for stupid power just reliable but having the potential to run greys at a later date

just curious as i think my engine is going to have to come out

this would inc taken engine out and refitting and supplying all bits

i want to see what im looking at as i could get the bits aswell and then just get a tuner to build it

thanks

Do yourself a favour and take the engine out and refit yourself...its not hard at all if you've got the tools/engine hoist but will cost in labour at a garage!

i know what your saying but i just dont have the energy to do it anymore

this car has almost killed me building it and now this has happened

if i have to take it out and refit i will just a pain in the arse as it has to be dropped with the gearbox underneath aswell

im going to start pricing things up over the weekend and get onto a few people to see how much it costs to build it

hopefully it will last a little bit longer as its only been on the road a week

You could take the engine out from the top, with a hoist...

I know what your saying about not having the energy tho

Good luck, just be carefull who rebuilds it and makesure its done properly!!!

for the rebuilding i havnt decided yet

im going down to a skyline tuners tomorrow as hes only 200 yards from my door and has created some stupidly fast cars

so i think an old pinto may be a doddle for him will have to see

if not then the nearest is nms or reyland

Tev

trouble isnt the word lol

when on full boost its chucks out loads of blue smoke and uses a almost a sump of oil day

doesnt smoke on startup or general driving only when full boost is hit

compression is 140 on all 4 cylinders will do a leak down test tomorrow

looked at my water earlier and it looks a little milky

but doesnt get hotm well the car has always ran on the O and has always cooled down when fans kick in does take a while though

headgasket was done before fitting engine

so im thinking that its either valve guides or rings or cracked block or head

i dont know what tests i can do to try and eliminate some problems

so thinking its time for rebuild

isnt it more likely to be the turbo itself if its chucking out oil on boost?
i paid 2G to have the piston rings done and a recon ported and polished head fitted with a cometic 3 layer head gasket along with the seals in the turbo replacing. i would like to learn more about the engine so i can do things like these myself rather than having to trust a so called specialist with their specialist prices

the turbo is spanking new

but i can get it checked free of charge to see if thats causing my problem

so may take it off next week and have them look at it

but i dont think it will be the turbo though but could be wrong

plus i changed the water today as i didnt like the look of it

started the car up and the water coming out my swirl pot was lightly milky

so this could be a number of things even though it cleared up

even a shagged turbo would not consume that amount of oil - very likely to be worn or loose valve stem seals.

Is the oil black and sooty, this would indicate worn bores/rings/pistons

Good luck on your quest for a build mate.

I remember to good old days when we were out in your black XR4 cosworth racing at Brum, firing 6 foot flames out the exhaust

not so good then - if it was valve stems or turbo leaking the oil would just burn off and not effect the rest of the oil in the engine to any great degree

If its piston blow by then as well as burning the oil off the cylinder walls the combustion process also effects the rest of the oil under the pistons and into the crank causing it to blacken and soot up

Looks like worn bores and or rings, a rebore and oversized pistons will be a minimum, then its daft not to fit new shells in the crank while your at it

Remember though it could be a combination of things so best to also replace valve stem seals again as a minimum in the head

None of the above is expensive DIY, its the labour thats the killer

a.k.a

im going to doa wet compression test later as a dry one my comprerssion is perfect in all reading exactly the same

so this test should indicate worn oil rings

if i was going to have a rebuild, then i would do everything and spec it for high power at a later date

i went out in the car last night when i changed my water and the car ran cooler

i did give it some on a private road witha merecdes coupe thing (same style as the sl500 i think but a baby engine i think) and big ass cadilac(spelling)

either way it still smoked but not as bad and was pulling in every gear and just kept going

ive just gone into the garage now and checked the oil and its bang on the top mark

you might be lucky and its just glazed up/ sludged up rings which sometimes stick in the grooves allowing occasional by pass of combustion gases and oil

I dont know how good they are but why not try one of those engine cleaning solution like STP etc might help remove some glaze - I have heard they also dislodge all manner of crap which clogs up other things instead so it is a risk
