Thats a bit of an unusual shell - not the ones you normally see

Most of the new motorsport shells that crop up on ebay etc are usually the ones built in 1989 which came out of Ford to group A spec with lots of brackets etc not fitted (they came in a seperate bag of bits)

This shell though is either a road shell which has had a solid roof skin fitted, or is a group A one which has had all the brackets welded back on - things like rear spring supports, front tow hitch, internal carpet supports etc

Or its a rare original motorsport shell from the 1986 batch which only came out of Fords to group N spec so all the brackets came pre welded on. These were quickly used up which is why Ford built the new batch in 1989

The big difference between 1986 spec shells and 1989 ones is that the 89 ones used a lot of saff parts.

Its also had a coat of grey primer added, as the shells came out of Ford in a grey enamel type coating not a flat grey primer - you usually see lots of masking tapes remnants as well where the closures have been held in

Price wise, new motorsport shells have normally been about £500 cheaper than road shells, going rate for a road shell is around £1500 to £2000 with closures and motorsport are £1000 to £1500 with closures so a good few hundred quid less as a bare shell only

With the growing popularity for track days though a motorsport shell is the best to start with as its free of seam sealer and underseal so easier to prep for strengthening

I would say in time the motorsport shells will be worth more than road shells but there are enough around that 2k is probably the highest they will go for ( and not the 4.5k Simpsons want for there last road one)

Hope that helps

Karting you can talk -why do you always quote information you have gleaned from other people, as if its your own first hand knowledge.

You know full well you only got that part number info from the advert for the shells I posted a pic of a while ago, the original of which I still have from the Autosport magazine from 1989

We are all constantly learning from each other, why make out you know it all from day 1.

I wasn't suggesting there was a grpa RS500 shell, just questioning what makes a grp a shell, ie, does it have suspension points like the RS500?
I know not everything 3 door is 500 kit!

I just didn't know what differentiated a grp a from a regular 3dr/rs500 shell.

here you go

only the 1989 road shells had 909 numbers, the original replacement ones from 1986 would have had a v86 part number

i think Eggenberger were the only official 'works' team, although rouse and djr had domestic support of somekind.

Did boreham run the texaco rally cars?

The only Gen rs 500 shells are the 500 road cars

How can you possible have more than 500 , rs500 shells

all the race cars ( and it matters not who built them ) are not rs500"s , the rs500 road car was built and ALL race cars were then rebuilt to the 500 spec

I know what you mean tim

But there are 500 chassis numbers that are rs500 , and it doesnt matter whos pocket you lined you cant make extra chassis numbers

unless you cloned them

well the way i see it, this shell i have seen for sale which i got
a for mentioning is being offered for sale by a ford works
team who raced in the dtm in the 80's with gpa rs500's
this makes it genuine as i can see it, if ford make a rs500 shell
its a rs500 shell and the fact its been made with motorsport in mind
makes it somthing worth having.
