just use a standard shell then, basic weld / bolt in roll cage is fine,

remember a genuine group A shell will be LHD .

A quick initial way to see the difference between a group A shell and a group N one is to look if the turrets are fitted under the rear arches for the standard springs to locate on - they are fitted to group N but missing from group A.

Basically a group A shell is purely a load of bare panels spot welded together ready for further work to be done by the builder so is missing loads of brackets for seatbelts etc where as a group N shell is a road shell less sunroof hole and soundproofing/ seam sealing.

This is not 100% always the case as the builder may have refitted some of the mising brackets to suit the build of a group A car - or may have removed them from a group N shell- but its a good first pass.

question for bing crosby aka mr rallyesport aaka finchy
which is best?? loads of people on here go on about group a etc
but if it was the best fo mo co would not have developed the wrc escort
and m-sport would have continued with the gpa escort cosworth.
i know wrc is big bucks, but here people like to fit the best sometimes
and i don't read much about road escort cosworths fitted with wrc
stuff.

group A cars had to be based on 5000 homolagated road cars,

WRC rules allowed more freedom to change things.

group A rules came first then the rules changed in 96/97 to allow more freedom to modify hence the WRC car was born.

wrc cars are much rarer, parts are dearer, and are overkill for the road.

Ive never seen a real grp'a' road car either carl....as tim will tell you a cluuby grp'a' car (as most are) and a works spec car are night and day different....

lots of people fit grp'a' equipment to road cars with no concept of why they do it....that's the same with all marques....

motorsport i would agree generally inplies a stonger part but not necessarily that which is better for a particular application.....

group N shell £1200-2500
group A shell £2000-5000
wrc shell £3000-8000

rough prices based on condition, when built, and most importantly who by.

some shells were built into new cars so are registerd correctly but many were not and have any old logbook with them,no problem for competition but could be a problem on the road if you got an arsey copper.

ian,do you want me to post you a wheel mate?

i once remember john taylor he of ford motorsport mentioning
developing the wrc suspension, it sounded matter of fact , change this
change that, and turn this the other way, so how difficult +cost would it be
say to run wrc suspension or wrc positioned suspension.

and another question for bing how much does a GPA ex works (real deal)
escort cosworth go for or one built by a top 90's team?

a few years ago iirc bing had a miki biasion group a sierra 4dr shell.
i know of a few that went to ireland, one was owned by welsh area
rally spares, they used to buy loads of ex works cars/spares out of boreham.
i saw it rally as a works car with miki and with the brothers who owned welsh area rally spares,my mates fiesta cosworth kept up with it on straights, but on corners etc it got left way behind by the sierra.
that car was £35 grand just out of boreham.
it went to derek mcgarrity who has probably had more top spec wrc
cars than i have had hot dinners

Interesting !

I know a serious racing driver (in France) that told me he has an ex-Miki Biasion saph Cosworth group A, so I would imagine a works car, but I will have to ask him the next time I see him. I will keep you informed.

the rear suspension on a group a car is the best they coule make within the current rules, the rear suspension on a world car is the best they could make, so if your building a car why compromise ?

especially as the price for the rear group a parts is so high for quality items yet so much of it is not quality anymore due to age and use.

the front end is just quality through and through

for a pukka group a with spares expect to pay £25k and upwards unles s you get a really good deal, but, like most loking really good deal there will be hidden issues.

yeah but i bet if you did the £5 DVLA check and the car was one of
the FMC registration cars ie. A1FMC etc it would of fetched more

i know a lad who worked for M-SPORT who found his rally car(lhd sierra cos) had been owned by colin mcrae

Xen, if you run the chassis number or the old registration by the
british DVLA you may find out the original registration, then your friend
could looking into the history of it, i'm almost certain
when old cosworths go the same way as mk1 and mk2 ex works escorts
they will be somthing special,if presented in original livery or not.

i also know a fella who owns A EX RED GROUP A SIERRA COSWORTH
its been on the front cover of motoring news with no other pics other
than the cossie, it was a famous sierra in that it scored the first
international win for ford being a 4x4 Cosworth.Manx 1990
Russell Brooks was the driver
it was driven by Brooks then later on by McRae.
now thats a Cosworth, it was the black TEXACO Sierra
