i too would love to be an owner driver so any more info would be great ie... where does your work come from?, do you have a cpc if not how do you get round that?, how hard was it to get an 'o' licence?, an is there much money in it?
its bloody hard work, and very costly to start up on your own, basicly youve got to survive for nearly three months when you actually get out on the road without any money coming in, most places pay on 45 days, so for instance,

you work all of january, you dont get payed until the middle of march

i did my CPC through a local training company, called gatewen training, based in wrexham, they were excellent, and they made a very dull course as interesting as they could, i would recommend them to anyone it cost £600, but as i live in wales, i got a grant off the WDA, they paid £150 towards it

operators licence, where do i start

fookin big form to fill out, you need somewhere to park, a maintanance agreement, you need to show that you have available funds of £6200, an advert needs to go in your local paper, so the puplic can object to your application if they think your noisy truck might wake them up in the morning, etc.. that costs about £105
it usually takes about 2 to 3 months for your application to go through, and in total will cost you nearly £500

ive been in the tipper game on and off for 13 years now, so ive made plenty of contacts,i wouldnt have a contract truck, i prefer to work for different people, and spread my work around(if its quiet in one place, i will ring some else up, if they are quiet, i will try someone else)

i do alot of muckshifting work as well, this generally pays more than quarry work, but it is usually harder on the truck

that brings me nicely on to the upkeep of the vehicle, if you go down the tipper route, be prepared to work every day of the week, you need to do alot of your own repairs, otherwise you will not survive, anything you buy for the truck generally costs between £100 to £1000, this week alone i have spent nearly £700 on repairs, and ive got to go and put a new u bolt on this afternoon, thats my sunday fucked
cheers for all that info. just 1 more question though. is it all worth it (income/job satisfaction)?
