Im a Nikon guy myself but would stay away from the D40 as it dont have its own servo motor for the lens focus ie you have to buy a lens with internal focus motor.
Any older, good, used lens is out of the question as it wont work unless the lens got a built in servo.
If you are happy with that and dont want to use an older lens im shure its a good camera. Got a D50 myself and love it but it lacks some features that in the long run will make it highly annoying. Like a backlit LCD on the top of the camera ie you have no idea what settings are used since you cant see them.

FUJI FINEPIX S9600, 28-300mm lens.
I got one can't fault it at all, apart from a bit greedy with batteries.
I had the previous 6900, this is a massive improvement, from turn on to ready is less than 1/4 second whereas the old one was wait a day or two and miss all the shots, also does RAW, and takes two types of media, and you can have both types in camera at same time, movie mode is as good as my Sony Camcorder easily.

If you take quite alot of shots when there is less sun about, go for the 350D instead of the newer 400D.
8Mp sensor against the 10Mp for the 400D,
bigger pixels on the same sensor size for the 350D, gets less "noise" on the picture when it's getting darker outside.
There are some improvements in the AF system for the 400D though,
it's not all that simple to choose, lol
