It looked like tyre failure.

I'm not a fan of his but I hope he's ok.

Lewis Hamilton was unhurt despite being taken away from the Nurburgring on a stretcher after a crash during qualifying for the European Grand Prix.
The Briton, 22, went into the tyre wall at the 'Schumacher S' bend and struggled to get out of his McLaren before medical assistance arrived.

McLaren boss Ron Dennis later said that Hamilton was "fine" but was unsure about his fitness for Sunday's race.

Hamilton was kept at the circuit's medical centre under observation.

"He has no pain, no broken bones and did not lose consciousness," said Dennis. "We won't decide for a couple of hours."

Dennis explained that the crash had occurred because the right-front wheel was not attached properly after a wheel gun failure.

"Effectively the wheel wasn't properly put on, but that's not the mechanic's fault," said Dennis.

the wheel buts go on depending on which way the wheel is turning, so left or right hand threads
there is a torque mechanism in the air gun which cuts off after this point is reached
the pin then gets pulled to lock the nut into place
looking at the various replays, it looks like the bearing has gone due to the wheel wobbling, which has broken some of the suspension/brake ducting which has punctured the wheel and lost him his control

Ooops.

Still, will be good to see him try to work his way through the pack. Looks like his podium run may be in trouble.

In all honesty bad that he had an accident but thankfully he is 100%..

I think it will be most entertaining to see how Lewis H gets on with starting from back other than the ferrari's there is nothing really that can touch the Mclaren.

Be interested to see how he gets on chasing the pack....

He'll start from the pit lane if he uses the spare car but 10th if his car is repaired.

Faulty Air Gun my ARSE!

The Wheel didnt start to move until the point he turned in. Then you could clearly see something on the RF upright rubbing the sidewall causing it to puncture. That wheel had driven 1 and a half laps before it happened. We've ALL seen footage of the cars when the wheel nuts not tight. The wheel goes bouncing off down the track.

TBH Dojj's explanation is far more credible. Alternatively something just failed on that corner. Brake ducting, Caliper mount which then caused the rubbing.

Ron said "The same wheel gun also attached Fernandos wheel" Hmmm you reckon McLaren dont have 4 guns per side of the garage then?

each car has it's own set of spanners etc, even the fuel rigs are different for each car so i can only imagine they were doing things on the cheap

also, the docs decide if he races or not depending on how many G's he had his impact at

and yes, he'll be starting at the back if he's in a different car

I think they can get round it if they stick the original engine on the new tub.

Since when have McLaren EVER done anything on the cheap? They waste (note I didnt say Spend) money like its going out of fashion!

Thought I heard Lewis groan during the impact earlier in TV.

Listen to the YouTube clip at 4m50! Was bit scary to watch live when he didnt start to get out for half a minute.
