Snap On or MAC Tools?
I need to buy a few new tools (socket sets etc etc) and have heard / been told that MAC are actually bigger / have a better reputation than Snap On in the States.... Is this true or are they no different?
Also where are the cheapest places to buy them from, is it a case of just buying them off of the vans or do they do mail order etc??
Normally I would by Halfrauds Pro stuff as they suit me fine for what I need, plus cheaper, but the set(s) I am after they dont do!

Go for Snap On Chris and if you damage the tools just get them to replace it seen as its lifetime guarantee
Got a toolbox full of their tools so i wouldn't use anything else

Lifetime warranty is not worth a wank.
I had a SNAP ON 3/8 drive torque repaired by them as pin broke inside, cost me £52 13 years ago, used once to torque something well within limits, bust fourth time I used it after repair, they told me I would have to pay again, it went in the bin!!
I now use TENG torque wrenches, they cost less than a snap on 1 minute warranty repair, and have lifetime warranty.
I have had one failed, there was a new one on my doorstep the next morning.
I use now a lot of SILVERLINE stuff lifetime warranty, snap on are a bit unrealistic these days with their warranty being no better than others and not as good as some others, they are still trying to trade on their old name IMO.
I have to date had no failures with anything SILVERLINE.

Cheers guys, I have quite a lot of Snapon tools at the moment 9mainly because a friend wanted to 'lose' them for some reason or other and they have all been fine!
Also heard about this Silverline, do they have an online catalogue or anything?

How cheeeeap is Silverline stuff - I manage to get it all trade price too which means its even ridiculously cheaper by knowing someone in the tool hire industry I do work for....I do worry sometimes on quality but as yet nothing has failed (touch wood) my latest purchase being a compressor & a load of air tools!!!
However I am currently on the look out for a Snap-On Roll Chest!!!

depends what you do, if you are mechanic, or strip cars all day long then quality tools like Snap on, are well worth While.
Do you really need snap on everything if all you want to do is change your airfilter and , ford hoses to Samco.
Every tool for a job.
I use Teng as they have a life time warrenty not stuiply priced and i work in a hospital and have my car as a hobby.
I believe the surgons in our place would use snap on if they did medical tools
However the medical tools we have cost upwards of 2-3K each for drills and chisels and the screw drivers are expensive as are the drill bits, mostly titanium.
I would like to point out i have never borrowed anything to repair the car though

I like sanp on tools as they are great to use , dont break ( oftern )
it just makes me giggle how people who work in an office say there a rip off
If you used them every day and give them as much use as i do then you would understand the price of quailty

My tool kit is a mixture of both Snap on and Mac along with a few odd ball things inc a set of adjustables from a 1920's Bently (the best fitting tool for one of the jobs I have to do lol)
Dont buy alot of Snap on now due to my local dealer being a twat. Alot of the stuff the two main brands sell are made by the same people anyways but the warrantys between snap-on and mac are different in some cases. i recently bought a new tap and die set off Mac to which they give a life time warranty on breakages, which is honoured as I broke one being ham fisted....Snap-on dont offer a warranty on that set.
My tool box, as this seems to be a sub topic sausage fight
It stands around 6'4" to give a size idea. Need some side cabs but not availble yet

I work for ford as a commercial/transit technician and needed an injector socket, snap on dont list one!
Had to buy one from one of the cheaper independent dealers.
Dont get me wrong, snap on's quality is second to none and i have a lot of snap on tools but there are other quality tools around for a lot less money, Britool, Koken etc.
To answer the original question, i'd go Snap on, i've had Mac tools stuff before and there's little or no difference in quality but, snap on are far more readily available and therefore easier to get hold of if you have a problem.
Careful of the bluepoint stuff though, because i dont think it carries the same lifetime guarantee as the regular snap on stuff.

I know my opinion is probably not worth a wank
But I've used only snap-on and bluepoint tools during my throttle body conversion and they feel really really good to use, and really sturdy.
Seems good to me, just glad I don't have to pay for them!

Try getting snap off stuff changed or repaired when you no longer have a account, or their not getting there regular payments anymore (as you have everything you need for your job) then you will see how good there life time warranty is.
Funny but repaired stuff only seems to last 5mins then they tell you its worn out, not covered and buy a new one.
I was in motor trade 25yrs and had "snap on" is best since the age of 16 Took me along time to try other peoples tools and have found many brands are equally as good.
I would not touch snap off stuff now

snap on is good but over priced i use other makes half the price and just as good plus as said all ready if you not spending they don't want to repair anything i snapped the head of my breaker bar and they said you had a bar over end off it and never replaced it so bought a £9.99 speaciel from local autofactors and it has out lasted the snap on one
