Hi folks im now on the lookout for a cosworth. I was wanting to know what the ideal spec is, im wanting a well tuned one brakes, suspension and of course the engine.

There is a big variety in big power specs... ie greys light blues greens, turbos ecu.s etc which do you all recomend and why?

Martin hadlands is a nice all round spec.

Would cost about 200K probably to get him to part with it though, so that brings me swiftly onto the "how much do you have to spend" question?

Bit of an open question really mate, how much do you want to spend and how fast do you want to go ? How often will yu use the car? every day? weekends?

Also consider that the STD drivetrain is on borrowed time after 350BHP, then a decent box and diff will be 4k+ to get some reliability...

If I was building an escos at the moment I would go for:

Engine: LS2
Gearbox: Tremec T56 box
Looks: As standard as possible, probably on 18" MO's to clear the brakes.

But like Wil says, what do you want from a car cause to you thats probably a crap spec.

a good specced 400 bhp car will have £000's spent on it so expect to pay quite a lot for one.

deffo need an uprated gearbox as a minimum in it.

then be prepared to spend 4k on the gearbox and front diff, unless you drive like a granny and don't intend to launch it or give it beans in 1st 2nd and 3rd.....

Brakes I would look for AP 4/6 pots on 330mm disc minimum, suspension wise its a compromise between ride/ price and quality.. Konis will do most people, coilovers are £££ for good ones, like Leda or bilstien, but will be quite firm for road use. Poly bushes are a good idea all round the car. You can also get adjustable TCA's, rear beams etc but it all comes back to how much £££ do you want to spend?

A std engine will be good for 400BHP just on a T34.63, but eveything is close to the limit...Rebuilds is more of a case of where do you stop more than where do you start, 800BHP+ is possible with enough ££ but it will be horrid on the road..... all again compromise and what do you want out of the car?

A big turbo model is currently seen as the way to go for tuning as they have a webber P8 as std, so can see anything upto 550+ BHP on it with the correct injectors and mapping.

Small turbos have a reputation for not being tunable, but Stu@MSD had my small turbo pusing 350+BHP with a T34 bolted on and minimal mods, and as soon as my car is ready ( headgasket faliure , it hasd done 100,000 miles ) it will be going back and we are hoping well over 400BHP will be on the cards.

what do you want the car to do?

Im wanting a good quick reliable car, dont want to be getting passed by every scooby and evo under the sun either.

I will only be driven maybe once a week, my last car only done 5k in 3yrs so thats all the driving it will get too, but it will be driven hard when its out!

Im wanting somthing to keep, modd and have a lot of pride in. The standard looks of a cossie cant be bettered apart from the wheels and a few wee minor things so cosmetic wise theres not alot to spend on.

I dont mind waiting a while for the right car to come along, but i dont see the point in me buying a low milage standard car then starting to spend thousands on it when i can buy a nicely modded car well looked after and give it a rebuild!!

Maybe im bit in the clouds with this but its the way im lookin at it!

not planning on spending any more money on the escort cos as i the mk.2 escort to spend on, as that will be a track car too.

Why 400?

Its a bit of a middle man!

Most Green'd, T34'd, Front coolered Cossies will do 370ish, then you need to spend some proper cash to go above 380 so might as well aim for 500!

its easy to get the 350bhp mark out of a modern scoob or evo so you will really need 400bhp to be happy in an escos, the jap cars have less tranmission losses & generally drive better than escort.

i think you have the right idea about buying a car done, it soon starts adding up when the modding starts, a cheap escort would be around £10k, to have a good spec rebuild, head etc would start about £5k, then theres turbo, injectors, wheels, brakes......... the list go's on, if you had £20k to spend on an escos you would get a good well speced car that needed no money spent on it (apart from maintence)

from my car i wanted 400bhp will room for a bit more at a later date if needed, i also wanted it reliable so spent the extra money on long studs etc, i didn't want 20 year old technology injectors & boost control so i opted for jap injectors & electronic boost control.

most people will have a different view on the ideal spec, my spec is,

eec 4 engine (oil squirt jets etc)
6 long studded with wrc head gasket
pocketed pistons (incase big cams are fitted at a later date)
ported head
turbo technics T38 turbo
Omex engine managment
siemens 650cc high impedence injectors
Apexi avc-r boost controller
big turbo escos inter/charge cooler with pace upgrade (have aircon on my car & not removing that)

My spec is changing by the second, but things that will not change from my bare minimum:

Gas flowed head
Wire wrung,
Long studded block,
Low comp pistons
Many secret trimmings!

Some loving!

Guzzler......I think your spec is about perfect, and if you have a decent suspension and brakes then it is perfect.

It's ok having huge power, but they tend to spend more time off the road than they do on it. And the price difference of building a 400bhp car and the components you need is relatively reasonable.

Anything above 400 bhp, and the additional ancillaries and transmission mods you would need to keep it reliable start the cost's spiralling upwards, in a BIG way.

DAVE : I think it's time you spent some money getting rid of the rust bug on your chassis and inner sills.
