Default Flat Four engines

Can someone explain to me why flat four engines (like Impreza ones) make the low down deep growl?

I like it (hides) and when I was going to buy my Cossie, I nearly bought an Impreza just for the noise, but just couldn't have that as the deciding factor.

So, answers on a postcard please...

not the flat-4-ness of it.

its the very unequal length manifold runners that does it.

very unequal length manifolds make any configuration engine sound different and usually "better".

put equal length one on them and they lose the warble, sound more normal.
