Default Starting problems

My computer, its a p.c. windows xp sp2 is taking an eternity to start up. It can take up tp FIVE minutes to get going! It never used to be this bad.

Its doing my nut in. Can anyone talk me through disabling certain programmes at start up to see if it helps at all?

Thanks in advance>

type 'msconfig' in the RUN program, click on the start-up tab and uncheck programs that you don't want.

a word of caution to the above. If you DO NOT know what they are or they look weird leave them checked. They could be necessary startup files for antivirus and things. Also try downloading privacy guardian and ad aware from download.com they should clean up a lot of shit. plus do a diskcheck plus a defragmentation

Go to this site http://www.theeldergeek.com/ and use the search box at the top, type the name of the service in and it gives you a break down of if you need it or not and explains what it does.

Also consider downloading a program called CCleaner and running that against your PC using default settings. It'll clear out all your temp and history and any other crap it finds.

Check your Add/Remove programs icon and remove programs you don't use.

Cheers

Matt
