Default DIY Turbo Rebuilds

Can it be done or what?

Once my engine is built Im going to need the turbo freshening up. Got no in and out play but a good bit of side to side/up and down. Mostly on the rear of the shaft.

However I need to do it on the cheap as Im properly skint, is it easy enough to do for someone whos fairly competent with a set of spanners?

Any help or advice will be appreciated.

Ian

i wouldnt try it if i were you...

unbelievably hard..

nah,...it is quite easy..
im happy to give any advice needed, however.....

the first thing i will say is...if you havent got all the correct testing equipment, possibility is, there is something wrong with the turbo without you knowing it, and even freshen up wont cure it.

not saying there is owt wrong with turbo, ut you know what i mean....

edit * besides, you could get someone to do it professionally, with warranty for a good price

Make sure you mark the positioning of the shaft if your taking the turbine or compressor off.

My turbo was put on in 1996, got the paperwork for it from TurboSystems (GpA T36) who built it and fitted it, and the car has done 18k since. 6k of abuse while I had it.

if it s been looked after, ie regular oil changes, then unless something has been sucked in a freshen up should sort it

Dunno about before I got it but it had stood for nearly 3 years when I picked it up, and its had regular oil changes since I got it.

A freshen up would suffice I think.

Carl, do you sell the kits? One with 360 bearing and step gap seal.

lol,..
but i wouldnt put someone off trying to do one...
its all good if we can save a bit of money doing something ourself

just its a bit of a gamble wether its going to be wasting money in the long run
if it goes tits, your paying out for kit, and rebuild and any parts that are possibly worse than when started...

I dont break it cos of the way its built, its cos of the way I drive it Pete.

Much like yourself I have an abnormally heavy right foot which welds itself to the floor each and every time I get in the car.

G.B Turbo Solutions
Carl, honestly mate, whats the chances of completely bollocksing it up and needing a new one???

Im skint at the minute and Id rather have a go at doing it myself rather than spending the money for someone to do what I could.

If you think it needs to be done properly then Ill have to save pennies up and get it done. But however in my experience if you dont try you never learn. Whaddya reckon?

PM me a price on it mate and if your cheap enough I may just send it your way anyway.

i rebuilt my T2 and it was easy as pie, only thing that was wrong was the fact the last company had fitted the biggest oil seal they do for the T2 (so im told) and it wouldnt seal.

G.B Turbo Solutions
is 0.92mm the biggest oil seal they do for a T2? the shaft had been worked on as its gap is bigger than norm

There are that many different t2 variations, that its very hard to say. Also, you can swap and change some shafts with different t2's.
the shaft may have been machined to take thicker seal in an attempt to reduce the chances of it smoking.
Some companies have twin seals, which imo are gay.
Should be right with just one.

yeahs its been machines mate, and tbh it was a big wanky at the start but then cleared up.
strange thing was it was fine, replaced the big ends which put the oil pressure up a bit and it starked smoking like a cont put the biggest seal in and it would smoke a little then stop, then some, slung it in shed in the end, fucking thing.
worst bit is i got another in shed thats fucked, but i not pulled it apart yet
