you will find a decent SLR for around the 400 mark.....however its the lenses that cost the money and they can transform the versatility and picture quality of the camera
budget a few hundred for a new lens as soon as you are familiar with the camera and want to start taking different kinds of shots.

20K+ Super Poster.
Crap you don't need a SLR, a excellent camera to consider is the FUJI FINEPIX S9600
It comes as std with 30-300mm lens, will take/store up to 65,696 pictures on one card!!
I recently went to SNETTERTON practice day(25/5/07) and took 324 piccies on one set of batterries, which were ANSMANN 2700.
I would defo recommend this camera, which is 10.4 megapixel has optical zoom of 300mm, + 2x digital on top of this.
Find it discounted to around £280.
The only thing is with digital cameras is they are power hungry, so depending on how you use it a spare set of batteries may be required ?, but as I said I took 324 piccies at 5 megapixel and the battery warning light or even the low battery light was not lit so still had plenty of life.
I used to use a SLR but was a waste of time to be honest (for me).
If it is general photos you want to take the above camera is ace and it also does movie up to 2 hours, ie as a video camera, can't fault the quality evemn on movie mode or the dark settings for piccies in the pitch black, it can take burst piccies as well 4 a second, moving piccies, the worst bity is using all the functions but they made it easy by a setting on the dial I call EASY as it sets everything for you!!
It takes xd as well as cf, and will support up to 8 MB on each, so you can have 16MB memory all the time, which would be 131,392 pictures which should be enough
Only advice I would give after getting ANY digi camera is get decent batteries + spares with car charger.

You wont get much of a DSLR for £400 - 9/10 people don't need one anyway. Entry level DSLR's are pretty pony anyway, even worse with cheap glass on the front.
Look at the Fuji 6500 and 9600. Spend the remainder on UV filter, polariser, flash card, batteries, tripods, flash and wireless flash kit (note only the 9600 has a hot shoe).
In the right hands someone on a budget P&S can whoop someone on a DSLR.

I bought my Nikon D50 with kit lens for about £340. i then bought a 50mm (f1.8)lens from ebay for £85. I'm looking to upgrade to either an 18-200mm or 18-135mm in the near future.
If you want to get into photography a bit Tiff have a look in the pictures room at the topics by Mr Frog, they are excellent. There is also a very long thread i will link in my next post all about DSLR's etc...
Hope thats of some help.
Matt.
