Ideal drift cars?
Why is it that the 200sx seems to be the weapon of choice for drifters?
Anytime i see or hear mention of drifting i rarely hear about RWD cossies being used for this.
Are the 200sx for example more easily controlled than a cossie?
Personally i do find it takes a bit of skill to hold a drift in my 340bhp cos!
Cheers

Drifters seem to prefer the jap cars mate. Its was a jap thing to begin with don't forget. They started the whole sport didn't they.. or they at least made it a more organised thing.

Weve done this thread before....
Main disadvantage of cossies with drifting is they havent got much steering lock compared to many cars used in drifting.
Main reason its mainly jap cars as it originated in japan, and there are a jot of drift specific tuning parts for many Jap cars.
Main reason you dont see cossies is that no cossie owners ever bother to fucking go and compete! Its open to everyone, details posted everywhere inc here, but nobody goes.
You DONT need power to drift anyhow, if you NEED power then you cant drift properly yet.
You can drift a AE86 Corrolla even with 125bhp...
MadMac- Whyd you want a big heavy block? You want oversteer non understeer

thought there must be disadvantage of some sort!
I didnt know about the steering lock thing, thinking about it the saph is pretty crap at 3 point turns
Its a shame more cossie owners dont go and compete as they look alot better going sideways than your average jap crap IMHO

325i E30 isnt a bad thing really. More so when stripped out.
Very very few cars dirft well as standard, most could do with a decent rear diff (std LSDs are shit) and a few geometry changes for a start.

it helps the 200sx's come with nicely set up slippers from the factory... as well as trans oil coolers and a lovely smooth, solid power delivery.
get a saff cossie diff pumped up a bit, aim for 300bhp and that's a perfect drift car in my eyes (feels less tall than the 3-dr when you're hanging!).

Renton and myself started our Drift careers yesterday!!!! we got the Corolla drift car out
We made it 30 yards in a TOTALLY straight line and it broke down
Towed it home, called the AA out... and it went 50 yards in another straight line and broke down again.
Not the best start then

If you go for an E30 325i, make sure its a sport, which has an lsd. The standard 325 isnt that good. Early toyota starlets are dirt cheap at the moment, light and you can put a decent motor in there quite easily.
Anyway, what's all this talk of jap and krout machinery-give me a mk2 escort anyday of the week.

Only late S13s and S14s come with slippers tho ben (and only S14s come with trans coolers, not that they do anything), and pretty crappy ones at that, any serious drifters put in Cusco diffs.
And all cossies come with slippers, crap ones again tho, like you said, need pumping up a bit.
SXs, esp S14s, do have nicer power delivery tho.

yeah, i say about the slippers out of personal experience - i have a lot of mates on the south coast with s14s and s15s, and I was well impressed with the way they worked compared to the usual 'spin one wheel up' standard cossie unit. i know of two drifting s14s that use standard diffs and they drift lovely - unless I was doing some mega international competition i'd be happy using the standard diff in a 200... just my opinion after having driven a few. (and having driven a few cossies to compare!).
with a tiny bit of work, a cossie could be on par or better than a 200 any day. The winner of the gatebil drifting series in Norway last year was a beaten up old Mk1 Capri with a 300bhp Cossie and an Atlas with a ZF modified on the plates. It HAAANNNNGGGSSSS! Beat 900bhp Supras, 200sx's, Corrollas, M Coupes the lot! SO if that can do it, a Cossie can!

Its also SPEED, proper drifting is high speed, and higher the speed the more points and better it looks.
Its also not one continuous circle, its lefts and rights in quick succsession often, far harder.
Id like to see him drift a stock 1.6 saff round the corners that they use at silverstone for the D1 championships, lol...

Its got NOTHING to do with power, trust me, power often makes it harder, said all that earlier in the post.
To drift properly you should make the car oversteer naturally, not via power oversteer.
Still cant see any almost std 1.6 saff difting properly on a proper circuit.
Holding somthing in a continuous circular slide is far far easier.
