You can save alot of time by first wet and drying the imperfections down...then finish off with 1200grit then start with your mops.

That looks anodised in those pics? If so, u'll find it easier to chemicaly strip that off first becuase it a very hard finish to polish thru. The actual rocker cover looks very easy to polish having big areas with not much fine detailing work to do....the hardest things Ive ever polished were the calipers on my old bike...nowt but nooks and crannies, worth the effort tho

Dont give up so easily and finish the polishing job you've started Its more rewarding to see your own work under your bonnet

http://astro.neutral.org/anodise_tips.shtml

Theres some tips in there for stripping off anodised alloy. Then sand back starting with 400grit then going down to 1200 before going to your mops. Then finish off with autosol to help it keep its shine. Chrome plating is very expensive and also requires the item to be well polished before hand if you want a good chrome finish. I got quoted around 30quid to chrome by alternator bar..but their work is top quality (they restore old jags and they have plenty chrome)....so imagine how much your cheap cover would stand you at after a dip in chrome
