Default Lawnsys Clutch (Fixed)

As some of you know, Lawnsys car has been out of action since the PF meet and coming back from Redcar trying to keep up with me.
He killed the turbo and lost his clutch driving it like he stole it!

Today he was finally persuaded to pull it apart and have a look to find out why the clutch had chucked it.

Had a good laugh in pulling the box out, Lawnsy dropping the starter motor and just missing his head, firing sockets at me which had come spinning off the windy gun, dropping the prop down and just missing the pair of us, getting a mouthful of gearbox oil, nearly spilling loads on his head and just generally having fun.

Anyway once we got it out it became apparent......

Doesnt look to be anything amiss

Now the other side of the clutch plate

Inside the box was remains of clutch

Groovy flywheel

How it stands now waiting for its new parts.

right on a more serious note what do you think has caused this to happen on a brand new clutch in 890 mile????? the car has been drove slowley most of the time with a few blips as the engine has only done 890mile since a full rebuild and the clutch was put in new then.....

do you think ive had a doggy plate????? as i had been getting a noise off the clutch for a bit before it went all together id say from about 700mile...

Did anyone else buy a standard cosworth clutch plate off graham goode when he had them on ebay for Ł20....and if so has yours been ok????

i wonder if it was even a cosworth plate as i know the high pressure oil pumps they sell for the cosworth are pinto oil pumps with one of there high pressure springs in.....that is why you do not get the top with the oil pump and have to use the top of the existing oil pump for the spray bar......

maybe that is your problem as well? Get an Alcon 6 paddle on in there and it should last a lot longer

clutch never slipped just pressed pedal and it went...

pressure plate not that old and it was the flywheel side of the plate that went....

Heavy duty pressure plate on standard (Pinto?) friction plate, 8200 RPM and a heavy clutch stamp = mashed friction plate and heat/friction welded it to the flywheel.

Maybe also worth asking about the box on here too mate.

if the oil is from the gearbox then how do you know the box isn't fubar?
if it's oil from the turbo thenthats something diferent

i'll put up some pics of a clutch and flywheel that is in the garage, did about 2 months worth of driving before it died a horrible death, not only did it groove the flywheel, it also broke one of the springs

yip i know how it feels......oil is from the turbo there is about 2mm play on front and rear

looking again i think it may be the box that has caused it as it is differant to another 2wd box i have as spare in the garage .......

were the fork slots into the bellhousing on my spare box it has like a bolt head (but not) that the fork hooks under......but on my box the fork hooks under a plastic clip that just pushes into the bell housing and when i removed the box this plastic clip on the end of the clutch arm was NOT seated into the bell housing proplerly but i was not sure if i wa sjust because of pulling the box off.....

hopefully bigern will post some pics up of this that he took on his phone..

maybe it's the oil from the leak thats killed the clutch then?
or, more likely, the arm is probably not moveing the cluthc properly

can't see pics at work

Pretty sure all T5 cos boxs have the plastic clip that holds the end of the arm m8

The other box you have must have been modified

some of them have a machined stepped pin instead of the clip- My 2wd saff was a late 89 so might be later T5's

So the clip varies between older and newer T5s? The one above obviously and the little round headed one, correct?

How easy should these be to remove, Lawnsys more or less falls out of place. Could that cause problems?

Lawnsy picked me up around 11.30 on Sunday and on the way to his we stopped off to pick up a turbo for him. T34.48, not ideal but it gets him back on the road for now. After spending all afternoon putting the clutch and box back in we set to putting the turbo on. On closer inspection of the old one we noticed a crack in the back of the exhaust housing and 4 round where the wastegate flap seats!!

Turbo on and a few runs up and down to set the boost it seemed fine. Packed up and set off to take me home, at a nice steady 170+ something rattled off the floor which we thought to have been a stone, then shortly after it did it again, then again! On the way back to mine is a retail park where people go on a Sunday night so we thought it rude not to call in in the way past. On the slip road the car was popping and banning like fuck on overrun and had just stopped pulling full boost, then sitting at the junction it sounded as if the exhaust had come off. Bugger!!! We parked up and popped the bonnet to find the bolts had worked out of the bottom of the turbo elbow to the manifold and had been spitting flames and silly heat out which had melted the wiring harness. Bugger again!!!! A friend of mine was fortunately able to get hold of some bolts there and then so once it had cooled down we put the bolts in and headed back to Lawnsys. I would have got home from the car park but Id left my car keys and house key in his garage, .

Once back at his we put the car away and jumped in Fionas Corrado G60 to take me home forgetting the heater matrix had popped and we had to bypass it, so we topped the water up and off we set. Around 15 miles from Lawnsys the water light came on so we pulled over at a services and opened the bonnet to a pressurised expansion bottle and no water. Oh dear! After letting it cool down we limped it to my house and left it there so I had to take him home in my Cossie.

After a bit of tinkering tonight after work we decided the head gasket has gone so managed to limp it all the way back to his, stopping for water and to let it cool down. We then set to sorting the wiring harness with some new wire and a soldering iron, a few hours later it was as good as new and it managed to get me back home this time.

Good old Cossies, nothing but fun and games!

At least its fixed now and when I get the oil pump done in mine we can go out playing again!
