Take the pipes off the steering rack that run along it. Them remove the rubber bushes in the steering rack housing that will give you enough clearance to jiggle it out.

oooooooh seriously!?

done a search on the net and it seems it's a case of remove the tie rods and hoist the engine up a few inches, removing the bushes could be the way out though

i've got everything disconnected but it won't physically come out the hole!

Well i work at a ford dealer and i got lummered with the last 6 not a nice job but thats the way i do them.

just no-one here has ever worked on an explorer before and i got the short straw!

whats the way you get the bushes out? is there special tools required?

for future reference, once the tie rods are removed it'll come out with a bick of jiggory pokery!
