Default What damage can a clutch exploding do?

Clutch went on Thursday night, heard all the little bits going under the car.. It goes into gear fine, when the engine is off, but when it's on, it won't go in gear.

What kind of damage could be caused by a clutch going? Is it usually just clutch or could the fly wheel be fucked to?

Cheers

you won't really know until you strip it down, it's possible something will have got jammed againest the flywheel and badly scored it, it's possible something will have smashed a hole in the gearbox. Both unlikely though.

you might even find it's just the release bearing thats exploded, clucthes don't normally break to an extent when you can hear bits rattling around.

Really? Interesting..

The clutch was uprated, which is why I was so suprised it'd "exploded" I know when the clutch was last changed, the realease bearing wasn't..

What symptoms related to the release bearing being fuckeD?

no drive with the engine running is one, as when you press the clutch pedel the cylinder is moving towards the clutch, but not actually actuating the clutch as the bearing in between the 2 is now sitting in the bell housing in a load of bits.

It is possible for the clutch centre plate to break but unlikey as this wouldn't break up, thus minimal noise.

always a good idea to change the bearing when changing the clutch.

I reckon you possibly have snapped a couple of the springs and there jamming between the clutch and fly wheel

clutch pedel feels light because when you press it the only resistance is of the fluid in the system, because the bearing has gone so your not actually pushing the clutch cover.

relese bearing i would say

does the engine stall when you dip the cltuch

infact cant you just take the fucking box out and then fix the thing as its quicker than getting 400 people on here who work in IT or stack shelves at tescos for technical advice and diagnosis on the net

Never, ever taken the box out of a car...

The engine did stall when I dipped the clutch once...

If I tried to move the car it would vibrate like MAD, and would have to bring the clutch out at 4000rpm to get it to move anywhere..

I didn't really smell any burning clutch tbh, then it just wouldn't drive at all.

Had to put it in first gear, start the car, and it eventually got rolling.

There was a definate load of stuff hitting the underside of the car as if I was driving over a load of little stones?

Dan - IF it was the friction plate letting go then there's a chance you'll have scored/gouged the inside of the box...

You really need to drop the box and have a look though pal - no real way of finding out the extend of the damage on the internet - as has been said earlier

I'm getting shit faced in London tonight - but if you're stuck - PM me and i'll call by on my way back tomorrow - see if i can help you

I did this on a previous car but it was the diff that exploded, 3 holes in the gearbox, 1 into where the clutch is. The bits destroyed the flywheel, pressure plate, friction plate and release bearing. Id only just pulled away from traffic lights and banged it into 2nd racing a Porsche when it all went tits up.

Sounds familier...

I hope it's not the diff, or the gearbox.. The car still moves, if I put it in first gear, and start it'll jump and eventually start moving.. And the gearbox still moves fine when engine is off.

I really hope this eliminates the diff and gearbox thing!!!!
