Default Granada Cosworth engine conversion advice

I`ve recently aquired a Sierra XR4i which i now want to use with a granada cosworth engine. This seems to be a popular conversion, and i was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on what i need to change.

My two main questions are, will my gearbox fit straight on the the cossy lump? and, what is involved in the electrical side of things? Am i best off buying a whole donor car with the loom and everything else?

Any advice would be great peeps

Ed

I have just done the conversion on my track car so should be able to help!! lol

ok your type 9 gearbox will fit straight on but is at it's limit on a standard engine so will fail if used hard.

as for the engine and parts needed, deffo buy a full car then remove the stuff you need
these 3 sites will help you no end

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/xrcosworth/

http://www.maddoldbugger.supanet.com/home.html

http://www.fordpower-uk.co.uk/index.php?

also for your wiring pm "mark 24v wiring " on here as he did my loom and is great with advice over the phone he spent hours on the phone sorting mine out!

Deffinately get a complete donor car!!!!!!!

For these reasons....

A) the xr4i doesnt have a LSD as standard...the 24v does
B) You will need the loom and ecu
C) you'll need all the hoses and possibly the header tanks...rad etc.....
D) you can see how it all goes together before you take it apart

the 4i gearbox should fit the 24v engine (but as mentioned above is a weak link and will fail when abused) or you could mod the 4i gearbox bottom mount to accept the granada box (if you get a manual...if not then get a xr4x4 mt75 and have it adapted to 2wd)

The whole back axle, front subframe with suspension and engine on can be dropped from the granada and put straight into the 4i...

Then its a case of hosing it all up and swapping the rad, exhausts, fueling and wiring it all up.

It shouldnt take more than a few days if you hit it hard

Cheers

yeah my bad, thats how you do the 4x4 version....the 2wd version can come out easy just undoing the mounts.

So you reckon you can complete this conversion in a day? wired up, diff changed, mt75 gearbox fitted, exhaust fitted and ready to run....

I think not....and Tbh I said a week but that would be doing an hour a night and 1 day at weekend....just gives you time if you get problem bolts etc...no point saying I can do it in a day (whilst puffing chest out) and having 1 little problem and making yourself look a C u n t when the guy comes to fetch his car! lol

Anyhow I was trying to contribute to the guys problem and not get into discussion with you about how long it takes to do.

Cheers

Cheers for the advice lads, learnt quite a bit already from this thread. I`m well up for the conversion as mine isn`t capable of running on 6 cylinders.

So the first thing i need to do is find cheap granada cossy. Does anyone know of one for sale? Not much on ebay at the moment.

Any more advice welcome...

Cheers, Ed.

there are usually quite a few on ebay, try using the different search words such as granada 24v as well as the obvious ones
bargains can be had, I paid Ł60 for mine and that was the full running car with an mot!!!

24v engine loom and ecu, thats all you need.if you use the type 9 box then the fly wheel and clutch will work. you need to remove the gear box shaft guide from the old 2.8 crank.

wiring is not to tricky. A brand new type 9 will hold 200 ib's of torque, but a old tired one like most of them out there will die very quickly with a 24v engine. a rwd mt75 works very well with them but hard to get hold of.

Gearbox man will make you one or topboss will. If you have a T5 lying about topboss will sell you an adaptor plate and shaft estension.

you will need to mod the zorse down pipes, but its not difficult.

What i ment was you do not require to do all the work you stated.

You can use the type 9 gearbox, no need to change the diff unless you want the LSD.

So its just out with the 2.8 engine and in with the 24v, mod the exhaust and wire it up.

i'll try again
with doner engine ready and waiting to go already extracted from the car
reversed the car onto the ramps
engine and gearbox out
engine and box inwired up
driving off the ramps
1 hour 40 minutes
been there, done that, even had a helpoing hand in doing it so if you know what you are doing then it's all well and good

if you want to keep the 5 stud granada hubs (and the brakes) just swap the whole rear end over and find a sierra disc braked handbrake cable to go with it
at the front just swap the whole lot over again but you will need to use sierra tca's, wind the tre's in a little, use 4x4 struts (the granada ones don't fit) and sierra V6 springs and away you go

the gearbox is the only thing who will give you grief but the loom is an easy enough conversion to do

fuel plumbing might also be an issue, but only because of the age

so a great conversion for the cash, more power, and better fuel economy

from memory theres about 12/15 wires to mate up from the 24v to the xr loom.

you need to use the 24v rev counter

worth imo getting a escort cos cluth to fit in there, im assuming it will fit a 4i??? as mine was a 4x4

exhaust modded

You can take the loom out without cutting any wires (except the abs sensors) so dont get snip happy!!

If you want me to come wire it and get it running then pm me

cant remember the value now but if you put a resistor in the rev counter feed wire it removes the blips in the needle caused by the wrong dial.

2.9 4x4 rev counter works ok or you can use the 2.8 xr4i one but you need 4 resistors (its the way i know and works) or as jim did you can use the granada one

at least that bolt can't come back and haunt me now ,
on track at donnington on july 1st
just need to bolt the lower dash and cage back in and it's done

one question tho mark,I have wired the map sensor up, and have taken a feed from thee back of the inlet manifold is this ok as I didn't use the blue non return valve type thing that was in the line originally?
still have it tho if it needs it.

well it is and is not a MAP sensor, the ford wiring book says its somthing else, but the fact of the matter it measures pressure from the intake manifould.

but its not like a MAP sensor as it measures inrements in pressure it just clicks when a certaine pressure is reached.

and yes its to do with the egr so you don't need it, but I this it produces a error code on the ecu if its not there
