Default water header tank??

may seem bit of a soft question, what do i need to top it up with? a little confused that it's called that and yet there was oil in it.

enlighten me please

what car is it mate ,water and coolant goes in there.
If there is oil then there is head gasket failier

Oil in the header tank ain't good mate - means the two fluids (which should stay separate) are mixing.

Headgasket could be gone.......

have you tried pouring antifreeze in the gearbox to help
