Default Head gasket failure

Got a weird one here on my MGF... I know its a K-series etc etc etc etc etc but read on.....

It over heats but only after you give it good rev (say 5 mins at 3k off load) BUT and its an odd one - it takes 5 mins before the header tank bubbles and the temp gauge starts to rise.

With the filler cap on this has lead to me turning the engine off before it overheats completely.

But with the cap off it bubble like made for 30 secs then calms down. The temp gauge goes about 3/4 up then drops down and given about 10 mins the fan cuts out and everything is back to normal.

There is no water in oil, oil in water, misfires or rough running. I have just replaced the Rad and thermostat.

Any ideas?

sounds like a cracked block or head gasket has blown across a water way to comprison I think they are fitted with a metal head gasket as standard and they only seal on the silicone bead and that normally fails and causes what you have .take the head off really

Sorry, headgasket.

Seems to be a common prob with the rover lumps.

Have you looked up a rover forum for further help?

the K series are bad for air locking, specially since you have changed rad etc...

I'd go with a possible air lock first before presuming the worst!!!

I had a right bitch of a job getting all the air out of the system in a Metro after I'd done the headgasket!!!! Try getting a LARGE funnel & putting that in the header tank & filling that with coolant to give it a bigger head of water - I found this helped alot. I also heard that sometimes drilling a couple of holes in the stat helps also!!!

A cracked block would not let the engine run for more than about 5 mins without over heating, It can idle indefinatly without over heating.
