DVD recorders
My parents want one and asked me to sort one out as they dont know anything about them, now all they want is a basic play/record job BUT there getting a new HD TV in the near future so it would have to be HD ready(have the HDMI socket).
I saw one in Argos for £120, its a "LITEON" and has a HDMI socket, is LITEON any good i havent heard much of them?

lol see your point but you can get a decent dvd player for less than £50 and 99% of people have them anyway...
most suff you will want to record will be on sky anyhow.
and to reply to your original question liteon are a weel respected brand in the computer world.

yeah and the fact it costs over £300 to set up initially all they want is a dvd player that can record aswell, they have digital freeview and thats all they want.
And i know LITEON do pc dvd drives, id just never heard of them making home dvd players.
Should be ok then for 120 quid with HDMI.

We've got a Panasonic one.
One of the great features is when you use a DVD RAM disc. You can start playing the beginning of what you've recorded whilst it still records the end. (Does that make sense)
You can get 4hrs on Long Play onto a 120 disc. And the qualities pretty good at that resolution.
Get one, but dont pay a fortune as in 1-2 years we'll all need to buy the dual LG player/recorders (The ones that do BLu ray and HD DVD)

Ive got a Philips DVD recorder. Cost £200 from Argos, but I got (Free) £170 vouchers. Cost me £30 in the end
It has a Hard Drive built in (I only use disks if I record something for my brother and drop it round to him) and is connected to Sky. It has a timer function too
So with the timer function set and the "Auto View" set on Sky Ive paid £30 for something similier to SKY +. But its cheaper than the Sky + installation, let alone the £10 per month

Have you looked at Hard disc DVD recorders? I'm not sure what the prices arelike now as I bought my Panasonic one a few years back, but you get alot more storage on the hard disc and you can also record onto DVD as well.

i've only used the dvd ram discs because you can edit the recording afterwards, partial erasing, spliting the recording, all sorts of other crap

hmmm, i haven't got another dvd player other than my sony 725 from way back when dvd players first came out
it does have everything you want in a dvd player (inclusing 6 ch surround and digital thingies in the back) but cost a bomb back in the day (i think i bougt it in 2000) and, to be honest it's reserved for the r1 flicks that you can slot in, turn the sound up and watch on a 42" screen (like transformers )
as to the point of it not working on another machine, they only want one and with the dvd's you can stick them onto a computer and swap them about that way anyway
i can#'t see the problem there
