Chjeck what the computer can handle in book about motherboard first as if you pout in too much memory it will crash!!
Have you got double sided DDR ?
You also need to make sure that what ever you put in is the same speed of memory as tey will go at the slowest speed one otherwise, will have PC marked then a speed eg 270 etc.

chances are youll only have 2 slots for the RAM to go in so you wont be able to keep the 2x 256 AND have a 1 gb set aswell

so i can now buy 1 stick of 1gb and at a later date buy another 1gb stick obvisouly making sure they are matching, which in theory will give me 2.5gb. Correct.

Your best buying a pair of 512mbs or a pair of 1gbs mate, then you can run it in dual channel mode, which gives a performance advantage.

If you look at the suggested memory at crucial it will say 1gb kit (2x 512mb) or a 2gb kit (2x1gb) which is matched pair memory suitable for dual channeling. The 2x256mb sticks that are already in there will be a matched pair set to run in dual channel.

Depending on the board, slots 1&2 and 3&4 will be the linked slots for pairing, or on some machines such as HP/Compaqs, it will be 1&3 and 2&4

hope this helps

If youf finances can stretch to it, i'd go for a pair of 1gb sticks suitable for dual channelling. If not, get a pair of 512s, then another pair of 512s at a later date (stick the 2x 256 sticks on ebay). Much better to have matched pairs
