I did some research into this a few months ago, and found this helpful info:

XEP 90 is a mineral oil based gear oil, that has been formulated with a high level of extreme pressure (EP) additives and friction modifiers to protect the critical mechanisms of limited slip differentials. In addition to high load carrying capability, XEP 90 will protect against rust and corrosion and has a low foaming tendency. Shock loading occurs when one of the driven wheels looses traction and the differential locks redistributing the drive equally. Standard API GL5 gear oils are unable to cope with this extreme condition and therefore it necessary to use a proper limited slip differential oil to promote long component life.

XEP 90 has been specifically designed for use in limited slip differentials requiring a SAE 90 lubricant. This includes all automotive, agricultural and heavy duty plant designs. This grade may also be used in standard differentials, axles, reduction hubs, slewing gears, transfer boxes, etc., where an API GL5 SAE 90 gear oil is required.
