Default pressure testing from turbo to inlet Question

i have made my own pressure test things that you put a air line or a pump to and it goes in place of the air filter to pressurise the system to find a leak but is the a trimming position that I have to set the timing to as whats stopping the air from getting out of the exhaust

yea but if the ex valves are open and the inlet valves are open I won't hold pressure it will leak it all in the exhaust am I right as I cant seem to get any more than 1 bar on my electric tyre pump it will pump up to 1 bar but won't go past that and theirs no leak but I will only hold for 5 seconds and it all leaks out and I think its leaking it out the exhaust so how do people do this test

abdr500, yes, some air will leak past the open valves and through the exhaust but you dont have to worry about that at all.

This is because your compressor has a "head" of compressed air (in the receiving tank) that is far larger in quantity than the leakage.

In effect, the air leaks are backed up by a large volume of compressed air that constantly replaces the leakage amount.

The trick is to find and stop all the leaks between the turbo and the head.

L8 ECU
i c now i get it as i am only using a tyre pump with a 1 way valve i was assuming that it will hold pressure but clearly that the valves will be open and will leak it out and i dont have a compresor with a tank to back it up is this right

Yes, IMO you need a compressor that has at least a small receiver/tank.

You could try blocking up the exhaust tailpipe with a bung, but even then a tyre pump is not such a good idea, because when finding the leak(s) it takes time to establish exactly where they are.

You need to do this by feeling and listening in key areas (under the plenum, all pipes/unions from the plenum + intercooler & hoses).

Do as per Doug (maybe borrow or hire a compressor)

As a tip, as well as listening, try squirting a soapy water mix over the engine and all air gaskets and joints (especially inlet to head joint) - it will bubble if there is an air leak.

Have done that to mine in the past and found a hair line crack in my inlet manifold (got to fix asap) and found the inlet manifold to head gasket is leaking a lot.
