I know that "by law" I cant use my LWB , high roof tranny legaly
as the Train weight is to high ,,so a motor home must be the same
Cant look at the plate on the motorhome as i havent gone to look at any yet as i didnt want to bother if it was not possible
I get away with useing my tranny by saying its for personal use and not business and just wanted to know if this is the same with a motorhome

He is correct
If its for business purposes then a taco is needed ( i was pulled towing by VOSA ) and luckily i new the law and told him it was my own car on the trailor and not for business ,,He smiled and said " who told you the get out clause "
He confirmed that if my van and trailor is being used for business then i had to fit a Tacho , but as long as i said it was private use then can do nothing about it

The problem is tho ,,as atated above , the plate means nothing if the law can be altered depending on what you use it for
By law my tranny train weight is above its limit with a car and trailor , yet i am legal to use it if you know what to say
so i need to know whats what with a motorhome before i even look at the plate
seems stupid i know , but with many laws you can get away with a lot if you know the rules inside and out

you asked about a motorhome for your own use,so no bloody tacho is needed.
as for the lwb van needing one and the swb van not again, bollocks!!!!!!!!!
if its for business use ANY vehicle towing a trailer over 350kgs needs a tacho if travelling more than 30miles or 50 kilometeres from its registerd address as the crow flies.
but your not asking about business use so lets not stray off topic.

the terms is actually " not for hire or reward"
if you use this then work does not even come into it
most motorhomes pal are built on van chassis, so just look for the rating of the original van plus the weight of its own conversion plate
but you wouldnt use a motorhome for work anyway !!
i.e lwb transit 350,
std van 1250kgs
gross weight 3500kgs
gross train 5500kgs = fully loaded van plus trailer of max 2000kgs
when they convert them they must provide a new 'plate' as it will now be heavier than the original van
e.g
std motorhome on 350 chassis
unladed 2600kgs
gross 3500kgs
gross train 5500kgs = fully laded plus trailer max 2000kgs
just make sure its built on a big enough chassis
all above are approximate figures !!

I sort of feel that as long as the motorhome is built well enough i will get away with it as its not for Hire or reward , so should be ok

trailer can weigh upto 3400kgs in theory and would still not need a tacho as long as the prime mover only weighed 100kgs.
its all about total weight..
as for miles from base busines... horse shit mate.. pure and simple myth..
private use no tacho needed. busines use above 3500kgs tacho needed..
all this obo only applies if you have a licence enableing you to have a total weight exceeding 3500kgs ie c1, c or c+e
as for the motor home, no tacho would be needed but you would need to check that you have a licence to drive it.
ie if you have grandfather rights on c1 then you could drive it with a trailor as long as the total mass did not exceed 8250kgs, 750kgs of that being the traior. but this would be a big motor home. lengh of the motor home means nothing, its all about the plated weight

DEYTUKURJERBS
The Distinctive Cars York guys crack me up when they take all their track n drift cars to shows.
They got a big double decker car transporter with 3/4 cars on them AND it tows a trailer with the last one on it too
Or if your totally minted like the Roger Clark lads you roll up in ann awesome Formula1 spec brand new car transporter thing.
And still come 2nd place to the Zen Scooby that gets driven there and back
