Differences between ST170 and Zetec
Got a chap on another forum wondering about the 2 engines and I have to be honest I don't know what the differences and compatability between them.
Thought I'd ask on here as you're all great *crawl crawl*

I quite enjoyed razzing my mates ST170. Needs more power but once you get used to the fact it won't put you in the back seat when you stamp on the right pedal it's a cracker

They are VERY similar apart from the heads.
The ST uses stronger rods and pistons though.
What sort of differences do you want to know about?

Somebody is talking about slapping a ST170 head on an earlier 2litre Zetec block to get the 170bhp but I didn't think it would be as straight forward as that.

The VVT is what really makes the extra power, don't get me wrong, the ST head does have slightly bigger valves, stiffer springs, lairier cams and much better ports. However - you'd really need a complete ST170 engine with inlet manifold, control boxes, Black Oak ECU etc. and then swap the bottom ends over to do it.
Much bigger job than it's worth.
With headwork, cams, induction, exhaust and a map - a 2.0 Zetec can easily knock on the door of 170bhp for a whole lot let money!
