Default Dry sump questions?

Asking for a friend as he is planning on fitting one and wants to know if the pump can be run off a multi v belt rather than a tooth belt?

At what level and where should the oil tank be?

What size should the tank be for a 2.0 engine?

Never had a dry sump pump on anything other than a toothed belt..for that matter ive never seen a dry sump pump with anything else.....tank for a 2.0 ltr i'd use a one gallon tank.....-12 hoses through the car....some people recommend -10 but we have only ever used -12....

Oil level will become apparent when you fill the system, but usually about 1/2 - 2/3 of the tank with enough space above the oil level to breathe...

The tank should be positioned as close to the oil pump as possible and have the oil tank level or higher in height to the pump never lower

Ive just finished rebuilding a a Jag group C car from 1988 which used -12 and -16 aero quip hoses

Its for a zetec and there is no space for a toothed belt but he has found a way to fit it but only using a multi v pulley and a different alternator set up

Who's pump is he using?

Can you get some pics....

Synchronous (toothed) belts rely on tooth grip and do not slip and retain an energy efficiency of around 98 percent over the life of the belt, the problem would come if they 'v' or poly 'v' began to slip....low oil pressure...broken engine......

There are lots of folk doing the zetec on dry sump....dunnell...sbd....

What car is it in?

I know there is but none of them will fit a FWD without major problems

Mk2 Orion with a S2 Zetec

Ah I see....tricky problem....nice looking motor as well...

If he is just running the alternator, can he not fit one of the Japanese style alternators, (cant remember if it would be necessary to turn the water pump drive round) to do away with an auxillary pulley and free up some room at the bottom on the inlet side and then fabricate/machine a bracket to run the pump on a toothed belt off the crank?

Easy to say on here...

Have you considered an Accusump System?

Yes but he said that the zetec oil pump gears that are the problem?

He's now running a electrical water pump and has got rid of the water pump pulley so he's only got the crank pulley and the alternator pulley.

I've spoke to him about this and said he can get some tooth crank and alternator pulley to match the dry sump pulley but at a cost but be cheaper just machining up just one multi v pulley rather than 2 toothed pulleys

So the kits from Burtons by Titan and Pace aren't of any use? Surely they'd consider some people would use them in FWD applications?

If you fit a dry sump from Pace or titan you need to run a extra pulley that bolts onto the end of the crank pulley and when a zetec is in a Mk4 escort shell there isn't the room for that pulley

The pump can sit at the back of the sump but the drive shafts get in the way but it can fin up front but then as i said before its there isn't any room for the extra pulley

My friend is trying to do away with the extra pulley and run it on the alternator belt for clearance

No way the inner wing could be modified to allow the extra pulley?

Or would that catch on the inside edge of the tyre/wheel on full lock?

Have you considered running the alternator from a driveshaft , would free up some room !

He's sorted the alternator problem out its just the dry sump pump problem

You could cut the inner wing to allow the extra pulley but he really doesnt want to cut the inner wing if he has to.

Position wise would it foul on the internal diameter of the wheel?

How much into the inner wing would the pulley go - could he just have a scallop moulded into it?

If it is only a bit - then surely the easiest option is to modify the inner wing?

Johnny - Just had a look at the kits on Burtons website again - there look to be 2 pulleys coming off the crank pulley - the one to drive the pressure/scavenge pump and another to drive the water pump, could he slim it down a bit with an electric water pump?

Just had a word with him now and its the extra pulley that goes on the crank thats the major problem

The water pump pulley will not be used has he's modified the water pump for the electrical one

Depending on how wide the extra pulley is that bolts to the crank he may get away with machining the extra pulley to make it fit?
