hi
Good cars.
Audi TT engine and gearbox, I believe 180bhp standard.
Leather interior, reliability, good build quality, space in the back, and tuneable (see Revo or AMD). I remember seeing a WRC style body kit whilst in Greece that looked awesome but not OTT.
Good examples now at the 5k mark or less, definitely worth a punt.
Forget badge snobbery this is a good car!

I worked for skoda for a number of years, and sold countless of the Vrs Octavia models. I even supplied west mids. police with a number of cars for surveilance/persuit purposes.
They are generally bullet proof, they seem longer geared than the mk4 golf 1.8T (they will do a genuine 145mph), but still remain economical.
Only available in 4 colours - Silver- Black magic met, Lemon Yellow, rally red(later corrida red)
Main probs are grounded out front spoiler, interior carpet marks very easily (no probs if looked after).
We used to supply chipped cars to customers from new, with both jabbasport and amd doing the work, all chipped cars were undetectable with the vag diagnostics....
Contrary to popular belief, plod spec cars are mechanically identicle to standard cars, NOTHING was uprated..
Just make sure that they have been serviced every 10k (the variable service intervals ideas dont seem to work on hard driven examples), and aren't too badly knocked about etc.

I got one Tiff, gotta say its the best everyday car I've had for the money.
Someone said they are heavy - bollox - 100kg lighter than the eqivalent Passat, part of the reason they work so well compared to other similar stuff. You dont get any crap you dont need that just adds weight, 180bhp as standard with little lag and good fuel economy, decent brakes (312mm fronts standard ), climate aircon and thats about it.
The interior isnt to everyone's taste, with the white/silver panels in the leather.
The boot is huge, interior space is ok, but rear legroom could be better.
The only bad thing i can really moan about is the sound system which is shit, well in the Mk1 model anyway, but thats easy fixed.
I payed less than Ł5k for a 02 car last year
*EDIT* oh.. one big nasty I forgot about in my enthusiasm.. it is FWD but hey, cant have everything

Tiff they are good motors, superb easily tuned engine, very good brakes (TT 225), very long geared (as all ready said), corner really well, massive boot, interior well you get use to it any way and it grows on you . Mine came standerd with climate and sunroof and blacked out windows as it was the first one in Carlisle.
Go and give one a good drive and see what you think mate knock the ASR off though, you will buy one after it as for problems well erm.. i aint had any and i love it

i looked for an Octavia VRS and couldnt find anything via any local dealers or car trade,
then i found out that the VRS Octavia was only FWD and not 4wd as origionaly thaught!
Anyway i bought a 2.5 TDi A4 Quattro, changed the exhausts from the cats backover, re-mapped the ECU, (not a 5hitty hopper box conversion!!)
When the car isnt eating MAS meters the torque is imense.........
no arguments created but the (flywheel) power and torque figures as proved on "Diesel Power" are as follows:
1999 Audi A4 2.5TDi Quattro = 157bhp
My A4 quattro = 212bhp and just over 385lb/ft torque!!

The test figs were amazing for a 1354kg car with 180bhp - 0-60 in 6.7, 0-100 in 16.7, ss1/4 15.4@93 and a max of 144.......so much so they smelt a rat and suspected they had been supplied with an "uprated" or "chipped" version pushing out over 200bhp.
They went on to comment about it in the EOY issue - they also re-tested one and achieved 0-60 in 7.8 and 0-100 in 20.8 which seems more like it ?
The police round here use them as unmarked cars so beware on the Shrewsbury bypass if you see a black or silver one approaching fast!
I looked for one at the beginning of the year, as a friend has one and it has been very reliable ( apart from a coil pack going ) and if you need to transport lots of stuff they have ( as stated ) a HUGE boot. Sadly they were all a bit too much cash for what I had so ended up with a cheaper BM

Good cars, was considering one before I got the Golf but we didn't need such a big car so settled for the Golf
as andyt said the 20v is a superb lump
Not sure if they came with the K03 or K03s turbo...?

K03 with a slightly larger capacity compressor.
215-220bhp easily achievable with ECU remap for Ł300-odd
I didn't want as big a car either, but they are soo much cheaper than the equivalent Golf or Leon Cupra and potentially more economical on fuel for some strange reason..

are they 5 or 6 speed?
and how do they compare to a tt 225?
reason being i've been in a few tt 225's and they weren't all that quick? same goes for thegolf gti 150, it's ok but not gonna set the world alight with it's power? is the 180bhp vrs really that much better? i suspect the tt is a fair amount heavier than the vrs so that will blunt the tt's performance a bit?

chances are the TT is 4wd too.. comparing mine to a 225 TT Quattro which my firend has, i'd say there's not a huge amount in it, there's no getting away from the 225 having more grunt though, so I'm sure it must be a bit quicker.
No modern car with the weight they are and 150-180bhp is going to impress dramatically, especially if you've got used to say a stg.1 cossie even for example. My stg1 4x4 will leave the standard vrs standing big style, but they are a very different animal, the power delivery is much smoother and virtually lag-free and ultimately it's a heavier car than the equivalent 1980's offering, which makes a big impact on performance.
What they do offer is fantastic value for money (02 for <5K no problem) and decent performance all round for everyday use, and still turn 35mpg kicking it around.
If you want more power, 220 is sensibly achievable as a stg.1 Ł350 remap upgrade, which makes it a different car again

IMHO the interior on these Skoda's is proper nasty and cheap. Engine is obviously very good..... but you can see by the materials used why they are cheaper than a Seat and so much cheaper than a VW.
Would I drive around in a Skoda...... not on your nellies!

LOL..
Aldi is ace, but Topman's not for me... Oxfam offer better value for money
in all seriousness, what other car that age offers as much for the money, in terms of performance, handling, brakes, space, and reasonable comfort?
