Clio williams 1 - opinions needed.....

cool little cars, one of the last proper drivers cars imo (before all the nanny state safety gubbins was thrown in) they can be a bit unreliable, other than that theyre great handle well and go quite nicely (for what they are).
i had a Clio 16v with williams engine transplanted, AVO coilovers, corner weighted and it was so much fun, used to love the local roundabouts etc
sound very nice with an induction kit.
as for performance figures, 14.8s @94mph 1/4 mile, not brilliantly quick in a straight line but much better than most in the twisties.
Clio and 19 16v gearboxes are a bit weak, i killed a lot in mine but the Williams gearbox is meant to be a lot stronger than the normal 16v box, also has different gear ratio's iirc.

Ok, been and looked, oh my god how quick are they
Had a closer look, full magnex on it, K+N, very tidy car apart from the rear arch going (common on these i found out), still needs the MOT and taxing Has a boot full of stereo (which ill sell), also comes with a low mileage williams engine which is sitting on the drive
Does 2k sound a good buy?

not sure on the recent prices of these as its been a long time since i was into the renault scene.
and yes... rear arches are very common for rust

peteh Williams 1 was a limited run of 400 which all had a numbered plaque on the dash, then renault undermined this rarity by releasing the williams 2 and 3 models. williams 1 are the sought after models but all are equally as good cars.
Not brilliantly quick in a straight line??? Amazing figures for a 150bhp fwd I'd say ( or is that a modded one you're quoting? ) - a std 2wd Sapphire Cosworth only managed around 14.6@97mph 1/4 mile
wasnt too modified... spec is as follows
Clio 16v car with 2 ltr williams engine, K&N induction kit, Hill Power chip, Clio 16v cast exhaust manifold rather than the clio williams tubular, Scorpion decat exhaust, AVO coilovers
from experiences and r/r days on www.cliosport.net the F7R williams engines tended to make above the standard 150bhp
never done a water pump, but the cambelt is pretty straightforward to do in the car, drop the drivers side engine mount off and support the sump on a piece of wood on a trolley jack, then lowerraise the engine to allow you access to the cam cover bolts, remove the cover, raise the engine to gain access room to loosen the cambelt tensioner, lower the engine down to get the old belt out and so you can see the markings on the bottom end/crank pulley, slip on the new belt ensuring timing marks are ligned up, tension belt, stick it back together
clutch can be done in car too, bit awkward but its possible. slacken drivers side subframe bolts, remove drivers side subframe bolts, pull subframe down slightly at drivers side. remove gearbox mounts and starter motor, pull gearbox into passenger wheelarch opening with room gained by lowering subframe, remove clutch, line up and fit new one, put it back together.
