heres one for ya that we have at work

a windows 2000 machine is connected to a DHCP network, but a /release / refresh doesnt pick up a dhcp address for network connectivity

whats the FIRST thing u do? (apart from pinging 168.0.0.1)

1st thing i'd do is plug a laptop into that wallport and try it to check if the machine's fooked or a cabling fault... lol

possibly badly configured/faulty nic

if sorting that dont help i'd manually set and IP address n see if itll talk to the network.

if that dont work i'd throw it away and get a new one

seriously tho, id put a packet sniffer next to the DHCP server n see if it actually received the broadcast request and check it replies...

and so on and so on...

helpline response: "reboot it and call back if it doesnt work"

then make sure youre not at your desk when they call back so you dont have to deal with them again

rule1 of helpdesk support that is

if its a dhcp network u cant manually configure an ip range, well u canif u know the ip characteristics

and i DO feel like throwing the fookers away if they dont work

had a classic today

we provide analogue tele/isdn/direct internet services and i went to a "no dial tone" call

chap had a data connection, plugged into a isdn router, not hearing a dialtone

thats wot i have to put up with everyday

stu, course you can...

just look on the DHCP server and find an address that isnt being used (or guess one...lol) if its only for testing purposes it dont matter :P

know wot u mean about that no dial tone stuff, im having the EXACT same problem with one of the networks i have to connect to (another company) if they reboot their racks it all works fine for a few days afterwards, but after a while it fooks up again... bloody annoying i tell you, especially when you have to log a call with their helpdesk in india if you want them to reboot it for you
