yes, in fact i learnt quite alot.
My most usefull lesson was dont leave the manual for your new camera in teh hotel on your main photography day.

I had inadvertantly set teh auto exposure compensation to +2 and couldnt figure out why all my pics were overexposed. I thought teh new camera was faulty.

Im managed to salvage half a day with a forced lesson on full manual, which was more usefull than i expected. But i was still annoyed. Mind you, it was offset next morning when i read the manual and discoverd it was user error and not faulty goods.

, I have downloaded the manual for mine as a PDF and only printed the key pages so I always have that in my bag without it adding too much weight

Whoops, wouldn't have been too bad if under-exposed as you can usually recover that quite well in software, over-exposed pictures don't always "repair" too well (we'll see why in a future article).

Excellent pics Stu, the one of Dan looks really good.

What sort of zoom were you using for the cars pictured?

Photobucket doesn't resize mine at all

Make sure below the upload buttons option you select 2Meg max image size in the box there.

The Humans were shot with a Sigma DC 17-70mm 2.8 - 4.5.

The panning was done with a Canon 70 - 300 f4-5.6 IS USM

Not a problem pal, we all had that issue, place was busy and seemed to just hide people we all knew were somewhere around. Got the card back from Lou no problems pal, glad you had a great trip.

Glad thats sorted ok

It gets a bit messy when there are so many people. Strange thing is i know who most are from seeing so many pics previously on pf but didnt get a real chance to say hello. I feel a right tube just wading in saying "hi i'm Mr Chop"

LOVE the dof on those headshots, I have a 50mm f1.8 takes the same shots. Its wicked when you get blurred backgrounds to that extent isn't it

A couple of my recent ones from holiday

All taken with the Sigma 70-300mm f4-f5.6, a worthy lens for the price

Lovely pics Danja, My new lens arrived today.

50mm Nikkon F1.8 (the same as you just ementioned i imagine!)

Maybe you could advise me actually, i want a nice zoom lens now to complete my kit (for the time being!) I'd like to stay with nikkor if poss maybe 2-300 max zoom with decent fstop.

I'm prepared to spend a little more on one, maybe Ł350ish.

Any ideas?

Cheers, Matt.

Thanks Matt

This would be a good start mate:

http://www.digital-cameras.com/acces...VR&amount=0.00

It's .5 of a stop up from mine comnig in at f4.5 at the wide end, but I mean that should affect much really as I assume for Motorsport you'll be on close to full zoom anyway giving you f5.6 the same as mine, which is fine

I'm not sure is the VR stands for 'Vibration Reduction' similar the the IS image stablisation of the Canons, so this would be a very good lens to buy.

I went for the D50 with kit lens (18-55mm f3.5)

Then today my 50mm f1.8 arrived.

I've just been experimenting now with RAW pictures.

No problem.

I only shoot in RAW now, just make sure you have enough memory and also patience...as toying with and converting 146 images THEN taking them into photoshop can be time consuming lol

But great fun, as you can rescue any errors that were made when taking the pic

Just had a quick play with that program, seems i now have alot more control than i did using PSelements 3.

Thanks again.

RE RAW pictures, yea, i'm finding i keep under exposing my pictures a little, the viewing screen is not great for giving an idea of ho a photo will look on the big screen unfortunately, but i'm learning what it needs to look like, if that makes sense!

Rawshooter is brilliant, allows exposure compensation (for if you under or overexpose images) fill light, shadow and highlight reduction, I've found it to be absolutely brilliant

Matt,
Under-exposure in the digital world (and in photography in general) is better than over-exposure on the basis that you can enhance under-exposed images pretty well, whereas an over-exposed one is missing information which you therefore can't recover.

I have my camera set to under-expose by 1stop (1EV) permanently

The LCD isn't any use on any camera to gauge exposure, depending on the light around you, it will look bright or dark and that has nothing to do with the picture itself.
Look into the histogram functionality instead, this is the only way to judge how well or badly exposed an image is with a digital camera I'll explain all this in more detail in one of my articles in the near future.

I always under expose my images too, so in RAW I can get detail back as a pose to never getting it at all where images are over exposed

Think I'm set to between .5 and 1 EV
