my old dad wants to know when the cam chain needs doing on his primera 1.8 51 plate (last of the old shape)

i've been searching all over

dealerhas quoted about 3 different figures

some websites going on about "lifetime" chains, providing oil changed on schedule, never needs doing!

but one web site says it is an "interference" engine, so if the chain does break, everything breaks!!!

nearly all engine are "interference" (horrid term).

Chains are designed not to need replacing as part of general servicing.

BUT

That doesn't mean they last forever!



for example: wheel bearing don't last the life of the car but there is no specific service interval

if it has any slight un easyness at idle then change it anyway, they used to stretch for fun on the old P11 144 models ( i worked for nissan for over 10 years till they sold out to the french )

i dont work in a main dealers, im a maintenance technician in the Sunderland factory. We wouldnt have any info there like what youre after

and they wanted to charge £160 to remove his dashboard to replace a blown bulb in the aircon gauge!
