Default Welded diff on a beemer

Done it today to an E30 318 tourer and what a bloody laugh the car is to drive, down the ind est (private property) spinning and sliding around like a madman all afternoon, cant wait for Crail tomorrow.

Cant recomend this enough if youve got a cheap rwd car and want a laugh

You are better off getting production slipper from one of the better spec models, I'm sure the 325i Sport comes with a slipper as standard.

only bad on a road car if your a complete pussy IMO dont get me wrong, if you just want a normal daily drive its gay, but if i ever wanted to fuck about in my daily driver, id run one.

you dont even feel it in normal driving over 5mph, and on most cars you dont even feel it pushing on much

production slippers are dogwank

cant see it biting anyone, esp in a 318, it will just understeer more

Fpmsl, as said ONLY you Dave....

Was proper fun last night in the industrial estate, I thought 30% chance of you bringing it home alive with diff in one piece, 30% diff cracking...and 40% u'd bin it but as said, what more fun can you have for that money an it doesnt matter that its fooked as was cheepo

Think Sean might think twice about buying it now tho...might buy the diff if he gets another E30

Couldnt come today altho wish I had now , was proper hungover..didnt get in till 8am an jus went straight to bed!

How did you get on with the drifting? did you manage to hold some decent slides? how long did you get before you stacked it?

one word: bollocks,im using mine as a daily driver, only notice it when im doing 3 point turns. it corners far better than it used to and in no way bites,it understeers a bit more than it used to.but it is utterly useable and very safe, just a little clunky if under 5mph doing VERY tight maneuvres.

sounds like cheap/expensive fun if you ask me

as long as you killed the car and not the people inside then you can always get another one and start again

i think the lesson learnt here is be carefull going round corners at crail

i drove a sierra drift car with welded diff on saturday, VERY understeery, couldnt believe it! really had to kick the clutch or work the handbrake to get it sideways at low speeds (im a n00b at drifitng so was staying in first gear as there was lots of stuff to hit )

really controllable when the back came out, but found it suprisingly hard to get it sideways to begin with!! just wanted to go straight on! more dangerous than the back coming out

Half your problem was staying in 1st gear IMO, your going too slow to do owt but understeer.

Its not just the diff tho, all sierras understeer like a bitch if drive "normally" unless you got power to power oversteer it (there a big recent thread on here about it), and if its fudgeys car you drove, then you obv didnt have power to do that.

People drive them, think they are colin macrae or the star of Tokyo Drift because they can make the car dance, they get cocky and the next thing.. it bites them and they end up with a punkerd car...

More likely to oversteer with an open diff, so i dont see your point really.

Its how the person drives (or tries to) not what diffs in it.

Neil I bought the car to have a laugh in and kill it, I did want to take my track car up but it wasnt going to be ready on time so I got the bmw.

I was driving like a twat and I dont care, no excuses or trying to pretend I can drift or anything like that.

yeah it was dans car, i was obviously papping it a it as i didnt wanna smash the thing up (not that he cares i dont think ), when i got a bit of confidence and was kicking the clutch and holding the throttle down longer it was coming out alright, would be much better learning in a wide open space with just cones to hit instead of 12" steel RSJs though ...
