There can be a lot of confusion because many people refer to the size of the bolt by the size of the spanner or socket needed to turn it.
eg. an M10 is referred to as 17mm, M6 as 10mm etc.
As said above, M12 is the width of the thread in millimeters.
The size of a bolt is normally given by its width (M12) followed by its length (35).
M12x35 is a 12mm wide thread and is 35mm long (35mm long thread excluding the head)
Dont get into thread pitch FFS

And just for further reference the pictures show Set Screws. (hex head)
A set screw has thread all the way up, a bolt is only threaded part the way.
You need to know this if you are buying, as asking for a 14mm bolt will get you a part threaded piece.
