A Funny thing happened to me yesterday - Good Samaritan ?
I was going to collect something from one of our suppliers and as I was going down a slip road to get on the Bedford Bypass I saw a guy stood by his car, clutching a map.
He jumped out in front of me and I nearly ran the twat over...
Anyway he obviously had a problem so I stop and he comes running over.
He introduces himself and asks if I speak some foreign langauge.. which I didnt, somehow I didnt think my middle school french was going to cut the mustard so I said no... only English.
Anyway he then goes on to take off a big gold ring and put it on the passenger seat of my car and explains that he has run out of petrol and has no money, but I can take the ring as 'security' to get him some petrol.
The ring is hideous, not to my liking at all... but it had a good weight to it, so I ask where he is going.... the response is Manchester, now with the best will in the world its 120+ miles to Manchester from Bedford so a can of fuel isnt going to get him there, so he says he wants £50 for the petrol and that he will take my address and bring the money back to me tomorrow and collect his ring
He can see I'm not convinced so he tried to up the ante and give me a gold bracelet he was wearing.
All the time I'm thinking this has all the hallmarks of a scam, his car had foreign plates and his missus was in the car looking fed up.... so I thinks time to do one... so I say I'll be back in 10 minutes, got to turn round to get him to a garage and I fooked off.
I've been feeling guilty about this since it happened but part of me thinks it was most likely a scam but the other part of me thinks perhaps he was genuinely stranded.....
Has anyone else had similar experiences ?

Smells scam to me. Why would he look at the map if he wanted fuel?
If I were you, I'd phone the police and let them deal with it. You did the right thing by walking (driving) off as you weren't sure.

Sounds genuine to me, that's what forigners are like though, they would give you their mothers just for a favor!!!
But these days you can't trust anyone, I would have swirved around him and drove off!!

What was his missus like? Could have kept her as security
No idea if he would have been genuine mate, don't worry about it.
Unless he is still sat there

No I didnt keep the ring, like I said, it was horrible feeling because if he was genuine I could have helped him and his wife and had a good feeling about doing it, alternatively I could have been scammed and felt a proper chump...
Oh the world we live in....
